Who it suits

Best for most people

The highest consensus here alongside the Clara Colour, and the one every outlet treats as the default. Tom's Guide called it the best getting better; Trusted Reviews gave it their Recommended award. TechRadar's reviewer singled out the E Ink Carta 1300 panel, which puts more contrast behind the text than any earlier Kindle.

Where it falls down. TechRadar is the outlier and its complaint is the money: it judged the design cheap for the price and said the Paperwhite no longer represents good value. That was written when the price was $159.99. It is now $199.99.
