The $899 Xbox Anniversary Console Asks $100 for the Paint

The Xbox 25th anniversary collection costs $899.99. A standard Xbox Series X with the same 1TB disc drive costs $749.99 on Xbox’s own store. The $150 difference buys a translucent shell, an engraved serial number, and a copy of a game that has been on sale since early August for $49.99.

What Microsoft is actually selling

The collection pairs an Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition console with a Special Edition controller, both in what Microsoft calls translucent OG Green. Every console is individually numbered with a unique engraving, which is the part that genuinely cannot be bought later.

Each one also includes a full-game download of Halo: Campaign Evolved, the remake of the original campaign.

Pre-orders opened to invited players yesterday and to everyone in select markets this morning at 7 a.m. PDT, one per customer. The collection ships November 13, 2026. The controller can be bought on its own and arrives earlier, on October 20.

The game is the part worth pausing on. Halo: Campaign Evolved is not a launch exclusive and not a timed bonus — Halo’s own site announced it as out now at the start of August, and it sells in a $49.99 standard edition, a $69.99 premium edition and a $199.99 collector’s edition.

That matters because the bundle’s value is not the same for everyone. If you have not bought it, the effective premium is about $100. If you already own it, the effective premium is the full $150, and you are paying all of it for the colour.

What the spec sheet does not change

Nothing in the announcement suggests different silicon, more storage or any performance difference from a standard Series X. This is the same console in a different shell, which is what a limited edition normally is and is worth stating plainly rather than leaving implied.

Whether $100 is a lot

For a collector, an individually engraved console from a 25th anniversary run is not really priced against a spec sheet at all, and a hundred dollars for something that will never be manufactured again is a defensible thing to spend. Limited runs of console hardware have historically held value in a way that ordinary units do not.

For anyone who wants a Series X to play games on, the standard model at $749.99 does exactly the same thing for $150 less, and the game can be added for $49.99 whenever you want it.

The one genuinely scarce thing here is the numbering. Everything else — the console, the controller, the game — can be bought separately, in some cases more cheaply, and after today.

What this cannot tell you

Arithmetic cannot tell you whether a translucent shell and an engraved serial number are worth a hundred dollars to you — for a collector they plainly can be. It also cannot judge build quality, whether the finish scratches, or how the numbering is applied, none of which is knowable until units reach buyers in November.

Why this subject: The collection went to general pre-order this morning at a price $150 above a standard Series X, and every figure needed to judge that gap is published by Microsoft itself. Nobody outside Microsoft has held one, so the only honest thing to write today is what the numbers say.
How we looked at it: Took the collection's price, contents and dates from the Xbox Wire announcement, the standard Series X price from Xbox's own product page, and the bundled game's edition pricing from Halo's official support documentation. Subtracted. No unit was handled and no claim here rests on anything but those four pages.
