On Xbox, Day-One Games Need Ultimate; Online Play Is $9.99
PC Game Pass has day-one games at $13.99 but no cloud play, which from November is capped at 5, 10 or 15 hours a month by tier.

For online play on an Xbox console, Essential at $9.99 a month is the cheapest Game Pass plan that includes it; for new games on the day they release, you need Ultimate ($22.99) or, on a PC only, PC Game Pass ($13.99). Cloud gaming comes with Essential, Premium and Ultimate, but from November each gets a monthly allowance: 5, 10 or 15 hours.
What each plan includes
From Xbox’s US plans and compare pages, read 13 October 2026:
| Essential | Premium | Ultimate | PC Game Pass | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price per month | $9.99 | $14.99 | $22.99 | $13.99 |
| Online console multiplayer | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
| New games on day one | No | No; Xbox-published games within 12 months | Yes | Yes |
| Library | 50+ games, console, PC and more | 200+ games, console, PC and more | 500+ games, console, PC and more | 300+ games, PC only |
| Cloud gaming from November | 5 hours a month | 10 hours a month | 15 hours a month | Not included |
| EA Play | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Other perks | Rewards points | 2x Rewards points | Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, 4x Rewards points | 2x Rewards points |
All four carry in-game benefits for games such as League of Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone. Xbox shows monthly prices only. Essential and Premium also advertise a promotional $1 for the first 14 days, which Xbox says may be limited to new subscribers.
Online multiplayer: Essential is enough
All three console plans include online console multiplayer, so paying more than $9.99 buys games and cloud time, not multiplayer access. Xbox’s compare page adds that multiplayer in free-to-play games “is open to every XBOX player”, with no plan at all.
The PC Game Pass card lists day-one games, EA Play and Rewards, but no multiplayer line; Xbox describes the benefit on the other three as online console multiplayer. If you want a bigger console library as well as online play, Premium lists 200-plus games against Essential’s 50-plus, for $5 a month more.
Day-one games: Ultimate, or PC Game Pass on a PC
Xbox says Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers “can play new games, including new XBOX-published games and third-party games, the day they’re released.” Premium gets new Xbox-published games within 12 months of launch, not on release day. Essential’s page makes no day-one promise.
Two limits apply to both day-one plans. Xbox’s footnote reads “Select games. Excludes Call of Duty titles,” and its April post says new Call of Duty games join Ultimate and PC Game Pass “during the following holiday season (about a year later)”.
If you play only on a PC, PC Game Pass costs $9 a month less than Ultimate and keeps day-one games and EA Play. What it drops is the console library, cloud gaming, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Ultimate is the plan that covers both a console and a PC with day-one games.
Cloud gaming: the November change
Xbox Wire announced on 3 September that “beginning in November”, Game Pass plans include a set number of cloud hours a month: 15 on Ultimate, 10 on Premium, 5 on Essential. Until then, Xbox says, eligible subscribers stream without those limits. Microsoft expects the change to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers.
- Extra hours will be sold through the Xbox Store once a plan’s allowance runs out. Xbox has not published the price; its post says pricing and the way to check remaining time come later.
- Without Game Pass, from November players can buy cloud hours to stream eligible games they own.
- PC Game Pass has no cloud gaming at all, per Xbox’s own footnote.
- Quality differs by plan. The compare page gives Ultimate “our best streaming quality, including up to 1440p on supported titles and devices” and the shortest wait times; Premium gets shorter wait times.
Xbox’s plans page already shows the hourly figures today, but Microsoft has not announced the exact date in November when limits begin. If you stream on an Android handheld or a TV, plan around those hours; what an Android handheld plays through Xbox Cloud Gaming is covered separately.
What a year costs
Xbox sells no annual plan, so a year is twelve monthly payments: $119.88 on Essential, $179.88 on Premium, $275.88 on Ultimate and $167.88 on PC Game Pass. Prices have moved recently: in April Ultimate fell from $29.99 to $22.99 and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99.
How Essential’s $119.88 compares with Nintendo and PlayStation online play is in what a console costs after you buy it, and Essential is the console step-up line in our tally of household subscriptions.
Which plan for which reader
- Online play on a console, nothing else: Essential, $9.99.
- A bigger console library, without paying for day one: Premium, $14.99.
- New releases on console, or console and PC: Ultimate, $22.99.
- New releases on a PC only: PC Game Pass, $13.99.
- Mostly cloud play: Ultimate’s 15 hours is the largest allowance from November; past that, extra hours cost an amount Xbox has not yet set.

How we researched this
No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.
- What this cannot tell you
- Xbox has not published the exact November date for cloud limits, the price of extra hours, or how to check remaining time; its 3 September post says those details come later. The plans page already shows the hourly figures. We could not read the Compare page's Essential and PC columns, which load behind a dropdown, so those two plans are described from their plan cards. Xbox Support's FAQ answers did not load in our browser. Plan contents and game counts change; Xbox says so on every page. This page does not judge the games in any library.
How we chose this, and what we did
- Why this subject
- Interest in consoles is rising toward the holidays, and our console-cost and subscription pages cover only Game Pass Essential's price. The reader's question is which of the four plans covers the one thing they want: online multiplayer, new games on release day, cloud play, or PC.
- How we looked at it
- Everything is from Microsoft's own pages, read through a browser on 13 October 2026: the US Xbox Game Pass plans page, its Compare plans page (Ultimate against Premium, the default view), the PC Game Pass page, Xbox Wire's 21 April 2026 price post and its 3 September 2026 post on cloud gaming hours. We searched Xbox Wire for any later post giving the November date or the price of extra hours and found none. For PC Game Pass, the absence of online console multiplayer is read from its plan card, which lists EA Play and day-one games (the control) and no multiplayer line, where the Essential, Premium and Ultimate cards each list “Online console multiplayer”.
