Quest 2 and Quest Pro Get Security Updates Until Dec 2027

Meta prints a security date per headset but no date for feature, store or social cut-offs, except on the original Quest.

How long Meta patches each Quest: security updates until at least, from Meta's Help Center, read 6 October 2026. Quest 2: December 2027, no longer sold, a 2020 headset. Quest Pro: December 2027, no longer sold, launched October 2022. Quest 3: 10 October 2028, on sale, launched October 2023. Quest 3S: 15 October 2029, on sale, launched October 2024. Meta's rule: at least five years from first US sale. Original Quest: security patches ended August 2024. Per-headset feature, store and social end dates: Meta publishes none for these four.

Meta will keep sending security updates to the Quest 2 and Quest Pro until at least December 2027, to the Quest 3 (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) until at least 10 October 2028, and to the Quest 3S (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) until at least 15 October 2029. Those are security dates only: Meta publishes no per-headset end date for feature updates, store access or social features on any of these four. From October 2026 that leaves a Quest 2 about 14 months of patches and a Quest 3S about three years.

Every Quest, as Meta lists it

Headset Status per Meta (read 6 Oct 2026) Security updates until at least What Meta says stops, in its words
Meta Quest 3S (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) On sale, from $349.99 15 October 2029 Only the security date is published
Meta Quest 3 (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) On sale, from $599.99 10 October 2028 Only the security date is published
Meta Quest Pro Sales wound down by end of 2024 December 2027 Only the security date is published
Meta Quest 2 Sales wound down by end of 2024 December 2027 Only the security date is published
Quest (original) Not on Meta’s current list Patches through August 2024 “new features” from v50; Home social features and parties on 5 March 2023

The dates come from one Meta Help Center page, “Security updates on Meta devices”, which also lists the controllers: Touch Plus to 10 October 2028, matching the Quest 3, and Touch Pro to December 2027, matching the Quest Pro. Meta gives a day for the Quest 3 and 3S but only a month for the Quest 2 and Pro.

How Meta sets the date

Meta’s rule is “at least five years from when the device first became available for sale in the United States.” The newer headsets land on that rule to the day. Meta’s newsroom said the Quest 3 “hits shelves October 10” in 2023, and its blog gave the Quest 3S an October 15, 2024 launch, which is where 10 October 2028 and 15 October 2029 come from.

The older pair get more than the minimum. Meta’s blog dates the Quest Pro to 25 October 2022, so December 2027 is about five years and two months. Meta describes the Quest 2 as a 2020 headset, so December 2027 gives it about seven years. The Quest 2 has the longest security window of any Quest on Meta’s list, counted from launch, even though it shares the earliest end date.

That clock is the same kind Google uses for Pixels, which also count from the first US sale rather than the day you bought yours. A Quest 2 bought used in 2026 is on the same December 2027 date as one bought in 2020.

Two caveats from Meta’s own page. The dates are minimums, and “Meta will publish further information should the defined support period above be extended.” And the page says “this is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.”

What the date does not cover

Meta’s page covers security updates only. It does not say when a headset stops getting new features, loses access to the Horizon Store, or drops out of parties and social spaces. We found no other Meta page that does for the Quest 2, Pro, 3 or 3S individually.

Social features can also go for every headset at once, whatever its security date. In March 2026 Meta said on its community forums that the Horizon Worlds app would be removed from Quest after 15 June 2026 and Worlds would “no longer be available in VR”, while “standalone VR apps on Quest are not affected.”

The original Quest is the one model where Meta spelled it all out, in January 2023:

  • Features. “We won’t be shipping new features to Quest 1 starting with v50.”
  • Social. Horizon Home social features went on 5 March 2023; Quest 1 owners could no longer invite others home or “create or join a Party.”
  • Security. Meta would maintain “critical bug fixes and security patches through August 2024.”
  • Apps. Meta’s developer blog said no new Quest 1 apps would be admitted after 31 January 2024, and developers could not update existing Quest 1 apps after the start of May 2025.
  • The headset. “Quest 1 isn’t shutting down, and users will continue to maintain full access to their existing apps and games.”

On the original Quest, new features and social access went first, about a year and a half before security patches. That is one precedent, not a promise about the Quest 2, and Meta has not said the Quest 2 will follow it.

Buying a used Quest 2 or Quest Pro

Meta no longer sells either. Its Connect 2024 post said it was “winding down sales of Quest 2 and Pro,” selling the remaining stock “through the end of the year or until they’re gone.” On 6 October 2026 Meta’s US store listed only the Quest 3S, from $349.99, and the Quest 3, from $599.99. Meta has announced Meta VR Glasses for spring 2027 at $1,299; they are not on its security-update list yet.

  • A used Quest 2 or Pro has about 14 months of security updates left from October 2026, by Meta’s minimum.
  • A Quest 3 has about two years, to 10 October 2028.
  • A Quest 3S bought new has about three years, to 15 October 2029, the latest date of any Quest on Meta’s list.

The price of the headset is only part of the cost, as with any games machine: subscriptions and storage add up after the box.

Printing a date at all is more than some makers do: of the six smart TV platforms we checked, only three publish an update promise. A date for security alone still leaves the rest of the experience open.

Questions people ask

Is Quest 2 still supported?

Yes, for security updates. Meta’s Help Center lists Quest 2 as supported until at least December 2027, about 14 months from October 2026. Meta does not publish a Quest 2 date for when feature updates, store access or social features end.

When does Meta stop supporting Quest Pro?

Meta lists Quest Pro, and its Touch Pro controllers, for security updates until at least December 2027, the same month as Quest 2. Meta stopped selling Quest Pro at the end of 2024.

Should I buy a used Quest 2?

Only if about 14 months of security updates is enough. Meta’s minimum for Quest 2 is December 2027. A new Quest 3S, from $349.99 on Meta’s store on 6 October 2026, is listed until at least 15 October 2029.

How long will Quest 3 get updates?

Meta lists Quest 3 and its Touch Plus controllers for security updates until at least 10 October 2028, five years after it went on sale. Quest 3S runs a year longer, to at least 15 October 2029.

Will my Quest stop working when support ends?

Meta has not said for Quest 2, Pro, 3 or 3S. For the original Quest it said the headset and existing apps would keep working after security patches ended in August 2024. Separately, Meta removed the Horizon Worlds app from every Quest after 15 June 2026, saying standalone VR apps were not affected.

Does the original Oculus Quest still get updates?

No. Meta said it would maintain Quest 1 security patches through August 2024, and stopped new features from v50. Meta’s current security-update list does not include it.

How we researched this

No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.

What this cannot tell you
Meta gives a security-update date only. We found no Meta page that dates the end of feature updates, store access or social features for Quest 2, Pro, 3 or 3S individually, so we cannot say when those stop; the original Quest is the only model where Meta set them out. Platform-wide changes such as the Horizon Worlds removal are announced separately and apply to every headset at once. Meta says its dates are a minimum and may be extended, and that they are not a guarantee of how long a headset lasts. Meta's Quest Help Center says Quest 1 patches ran 'until 2024' where its developer blog says 'through August 2024'; we use the more specific date. The years-left figures are our own subtraction from October 2026. We have not used a headset past its end date.
How we chose this, and what we did
Why this subject
A used Quest 2 is one of the cheapest ways into VR, and the first thing a listing cannot tell you is how long Meta will keep patching it. Meta publishes the answer, but on a policy page in its Help Center that sits alongside the AI glasses rather than in the Quest help section, so we put it next to the sale dates and the precedent the original Quest set.
How we looked at it
The security dates are from Meta's Help Center page 'Security updates on Meta devices', read in full on 6 October 2026. Launch dates are from Meta's own posts: the Meta Newsroom for Quest 3, the Meta Quest Blog for Quest Pro and Quest 3S. The end of Quest 2 and Pro sales is from the Meta Quest Blog's Connect 2024 post. What happened to the original Quest is from Meta's Quest Help Center and Meta's developer blog. The Horizon Worlds change is from Meta's March 2026 post on its own community forums. Current models and prices are from meta.com/quest, and the announced Meta VR Glasses from meta.com/vr-glasses. All read through a browser on 5 October 2026; the security page, meta.com/quest, meta.com/vr-glasses and the developer blog were re-read on 6 October 2026.
