Your Rugs Decide Which Robot Mop Type Makes Sense
Drag pads, spinning pads, rollers and track mops, compared on the makers’ own figures, and why their pressure numbers do not line up.

Robot vacuum mops differ in two ways that matter for your floors: whether the mop gets off your rugs, and how it is kept clean while it works. A basic drag pad does not lift, so it suits a home without rugs; spinning pads, vibrating pads, rollers and track mops lift or detach, and rollers and track mops rinse themselves as they go.
Which of those you need depends mostly on how many rugs you have, then on how much washing you are willing to do by hand.
The five mop types, on the makers’ own figures
| Mop type | How it works | Example, maker-stated figures | What it needs from you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drag pad | A damp cloth under the robot, pulled along as it vacuums | iRobot Roomba Combo Essential; Roborock Q7 M5: three water levels, no mop lift | Hand-wash the pad after each job (iRobot); roll up rugs or take the pad off |
| Vibrating pad | A flat pad that scrubs by vibrating, lifted or dropped off for carpet | Roborock Saros 20 Sonic: 4,000 vibrations a minute, 14 N, detaches for vacuum-only runs | Dock washes it at up to 212°F; refill and empty the dock |
| Spinning pads | Two round pads rotating against the floor, washed at the dock | Roborock Qrevo CurvX (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab): 200 rpm, 12 N, lifts 17 mm. Dreame X50 Ultra: lifts 10.5 mm, detaches for long pile | Dock washes them at 167–176°F (Roborock, Dreame); refill and empty the dock |
| Roller | A cylinder sprayed with clean water and scraped as it turns; dirty water goes to a tank on the robot | Ecovacs X8 series: 16 nozzles, 200 rpm, 4,000 Pa. Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Flow: 220 rpm, 15 N, lifts 15 mm. iRobot Roomba Max 875 Combo (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab): 300 rpm, 18 N | Empty the dirty-water and clean-water tanks and dry the roller (Ecovacs), unless a dock does it |
| Track mop | A belt of mop that rolls along, rinsed and scraped as it moves | Narwal Flow 2 (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab): 16 nozzles of 140°F water, 12 N, auto mop lift | Dock washes it at 212°F; refill and empty the dock |
All figures were read on the makers’ own pages on 7 October 2026, and most come from their internal tests. None of them is ours: we have not used these machines, and the table sorts mechanisms rather than ranking them. The Saros 20 Sonic is a separate model from the Saros 20 on our shortlist, and the figures here are the Sonic’s.
Rugs: the first question
A mop that cannot get off the floor has to be kept away from your rugs. iRobot says it plainly for its drag-pad Roomba Combo Essential: with the pad on and water in the bin, carpets “should be rolled up or removed from the room”, or you clean only rooms without them. Roborock’s own Q7 M5 page lists mop lifting as something its pricier Q10 series adds, which leaves the Q7 M5 in the same position.
Everything above the drag pad deals with rugs in one of three ways:
- Lift it. Makers state 10 mm (iRobot Roomba Plus 678 Combo), 10.5 mm (Dreame X50 Ultra), 15 mm (Roborock’s Qrevo Curv 2 Flow roller) and 17 mm (Roborock Qrevo CurvX, with its chassis raised). Lift heights run from 10 mm to 17 mm on the makers’ figures.
- Lift it and shield it. Roborock’s roller deploys a “Roller Shield” as it reaches carpet, and iRobot’s Max 875 Combo raises its mop and lowers a protective shield.
- Take it off. The Dreame X50 Ultra lifts its pads 10.5 mm for short pile but detaches them for long-pile carpet; the Saros 20 Sonic drops its pad in vacuum-only and carpet-first modes. The older Roomba Combo j7+ swings its pad onto the top of the robot.
Dreame’s split is the useful clue. A maker that lifts for short pile and detaches for long pile is telling you a centimetre of lift is not enough for a deep rug.
Keeping the mop clean: pads versus rollers
Pads mop until they go back to the dock; rollers and track mops are rinsed while they work. Spinning and vibrating pads are washed at the dock between passes, with hot water on the models above. A roller is sprayed with clean water and scraped as it turns: Ecovacs uses 16 nozzles and a scraper, Dyson a 12-point hydration system and a roller that “cleans itself every time it rotates”, Roborock eight hydration points. Narwal’s track mop works the same way with 16 nozzles of 140°F water.
That is the mechanical difference, and it is what each maker’s marketing leans on. Dyson says spinning pads “can smear dirt because they scrub without fully lifting debris”; Narwal says they “may get dirty after wiping up a small area”. Those are claims made to sell rollers and tracks, not test results, and we cannot check them.
What is checkable is where the market has moved. iRobot’s two newest mopping Roombas, announced on 2 September 2026, both use rollers, and Roborock now sells a roller version of the Qrevo Curv alongside its spinning-pad models. Reviewers’ views on how the results compare are in our page on the robot vacuums reviewers rate highest.
Pressure figures do not line up
Ecovacs quotes pressure in pascals; Roborock, iRobot and Narwal quote it in newtons, and the two are not comparable. A newton is a force. A pascal is force per square metre, so the figure depends on how small the contact patch is, and none of the makers publishes it. Ecovacs’s 3,800 Pa on the Deebot T80S and Roborock’s 15 N on the Qrevo Curv 2 Flow cannot be put on one scale.
Within one maker, the numbers say more. Roborock rates the original spinning-pad Qrevo Curv at 6 N, the Qrevo CurvX at 12 N and its roller at 15 N. iRobot’s older Roomba Combo j7+ applies 1.16 lb, about 5 N; its new Max 875 Combo, 18 N.
Edges and corners
Several makers now extend the mop sideways to reach past a round body into edges and corners. Dyson’s roller extends 40 mm, by its product page (its FAQ says 1.5 in), iRobot’s rollers 45 mm, Dreame’s spinning pad up to 4 cm, and Ecovacs’s T80S roller 1.5 cm. Roborock says its roller mops within 10 mm of an edge. The Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai’s roller is also the one whose maker lists the floors it suits: sealed wood, tile, laminate, ceramic, vinyl and linoleum.
What it asks of you
A drag pad is the cheapest mop and the most work. iRobot says to wash the Combo Essential’s pad by hand after every job and replace it after 30 washes. The robots with washing docks do that for you, at stated temperatures from 140°F on Dyson’s to up to 212°F on Roborock’s Saros 20 Sonic, and dry the mop with warm air. In exchange you refill a clean-water tank, empty a dirty-water tank and buy replacement mops. What each robot vacuum price band adds shows where a washing dock first appears on list price.
If your floors are mostly hard and rug-free and the mop is for dust between proper cleans, a drag pad covers it, though reviewers and owners of the budget Q7 M5 agree its mopping is basic. If you have rugs, a lifting or detaching mop is the feature to check first, then whether it is washed at the dock or while it works.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a roller mop and spinning mops?
Spinning mops are two round pads that rotate against the floor and are washed at the dock between passes. A roller is a cylinder that is sprayed with clean water and scraped as it turns, so it is rinsed during the clean, with the dirty water held in a tank on the robot.
Do I need a robot mop that lifts?
If you have rugs and want to mop and vacuum in one run, yes. iRobot tells owners of its drag-pad Combo Essential to roll up carpets or remove the pad. Lifting models raise the mop by 10 to 17 mm on the makers’ figures, and some detach it for deep pile.
How high does a robot mop lift?
On the makers’ own figures: 10 mm on iRobot’s Roomba Plus 678 Combo, 10.5 mm on the Dreame X50 Ultra, 15 mm on Roborock’s Qrevo Curv 2 Flow roller and 17 mm on the Qrevo CurvX. The Roomba Combo j7+ swings its pad onto the top of the robot instead.
Is mopping pressure in Pa the same as in newtons?
No. Newtons are a force; pascals are force per area. Ecovacs quotes 3,800 to 4,000 Pa, while Roborock, iRobot and Narwal quote 12 to 18 N. Without the contact area, which none of them publish, the two cannot be compared.
Do robot mops work on hardwood floors?
Makers say so with care over water. Dyson lists sealed wood among the floors its roller is for, and Roborock’s Saros 20 Sonic page suggests minimal water with stronger vibration for stains on hardwood. Check your floor maker’s guidance on wet cleaning.
Do I have to wash a robot mop pad myself?
Without a washing dock, yes: iRobot says to hand-wash the Combo Essential’s pad after each job and replace it after 30 washes. Washing docks clean the mop with hot water, from 140°F on Dyson’s to up to 212°F on Roborock’s Saros 20 Sonic; you refill and empty the tanks.
How we researched this
No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.
- What this cannot tell you
- These are the makers’ figures, mostly from their own internal tests, and we have not used any of these machines, so nothing here says which mechanism cleans best. Makers state pressure in different units (newtons of force, or pascals of force per area), which cannot be converted into each other without a contact area none of them publish. Dyson’s page gives its roller’s edge reach as 40 mm (1.6 in) in one place and 1.5 in in its FAQ. Several claims against other mop types, from Dyson and Narwal, are marketing and are reported as such.
How we chose this, and what we did
- Why this subject
- Search Console shows our robot vacuum shortlist collecting impressions for ‘best robot vacuum and mop’, ‘best robot mop’ and similar searches, and that page says mopping is what people actually want. No bitcritiq post explained how the mop mechanisms differ. The reader’s question is which mechanism suits their floors, so this sorts the mechanisms rather than ranking machines.
- How we looked at it
- Every figure is from the maker’s own product, support or press pages, read through a browser on 7 October 2026: Roborock (Qrevo Curv series, Qrevo Curv 2 Flow, Saros 20 Sonic and Q7 M5 pages), Ecovacs (OZMO Roller collection and Deebot T80S Omni), Dyson (Spot+Scrub Ai product page and its FAQ), Narwal (Flow 2), Dreame (X50 Ultra, global site) and iRobot (Roomba Combo Essential FAQ, Roomba Combo j7+ page, and the 2 September 2026 press release for the Roomba Max 875 Combo and Plus 678 Combo). The statement that the Q7 M5 has no mop lift rests on Roborock’s own Q7 M5 page, which lists mop lifting as one of the things the Q10 series adds over the Q7; the control is that the same answer names the Q10’s other additions, obstacle sensing and vibration mopping.
