Buying a Smart Plug? Three Specs, and One Hard Rule
A 15A plug is rated for 1800W. The thing most people want to automate in winter is the one thing the CPSC says never to plug into one.

Start with the rule, because it is the one that matters. The CPSC’s instruction is not a suggestion: always plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet and never into an extension cord or power strip, “to prevent overloading and causing a fire.”
A smart plug sits between the appliance and the wall. For a space heater, that is exactly the thing you have been told not to do — and “I want the heater on before I get home” is one of the most common reasons people buy their first smart plug in November.
The scale is not trivial. CPSC estimates portable heaters are involved in an average of 1,600 fires per year, causing 70 deaths and 160 injuries annually, across 2019 to 2021.
Why the arithmetic is tight
A typical US smart plug is rated 15 A, 1800W at 120V. That is TP-Link’s published figure for the Tapo P125M and it is the normal ceiling for the category.
A 1500W space heater draws 1500W. On paper that fits inside 1800W with room to spare, which is precisely why people do it. The rating is a maximum, not a comfortable operating point, and a heater is a sustained resistive load running for hours rather than a lamp cycling on and off. Continuous load near a connector’s ceiling is what heats the connector.
The same reasoning applies to anything else that turns electricity into heat for a long time: portable air conditioners, kettles on a timer, hair tools, some microwaves.
The three specs that actually differ
1. The load rating, printed. 15A / 1800W at 120V is normal. What matters is that the plug states one — a listing that omits it is not being modest.
2. Matter certification. This is the difference between a plug that works and a plug that works with what you own later. TP-Link lists Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings under its Matter certification — one plug, all four. Without it you are buying into one company’s app, and Matter, Thread and Zigbee are not three competing standards explains what that badge does and does not promise.
3. Physical size. The most-regretted spec in the category. A plug that covers both sockets on a duplex outlet halves your outlets, and no listing photograph makes this obvious. Look for the word mini.
Energy monitoring is a fourth, optional, and genuinely useful if you want to find what is costing you money — but it is a nice-to-have rather than a deciding spec.
Why there is no shortlist here
Our shortlists average published scores from three named outlets. Smart plugs do not clear that bar: they are cheap enough that outlets cover them in roundups rather than reviewing each one, and the individual scores mostly do not exist. TechRadar rated the Tapo P125M five out of five; a second and third independent score for the same model are not there to average. One review is a citation, not a consensus, so this page explains the specs instead of ranking products it cannot evidence.
What to actually do
- Never put a space heater on one. Not on a smart plug, not on a power strip, not on an extension cord. Plug it into the wall, as the CPSC says, and use the heater’s own thermostat.
- Buy Matter unless you are certain you will never change ecosystem. It costs little and it is the difference between a plug that survives your next phone and one that does not.
- Check the load rating is printed, and add up what you intend to run through it.
- Buy the mini. The full-size ones block the second socket, and you will notice that every day.
- Use them for what they are good at: lamps, fans, Christmas lights, coffee machines, anything low-draw you want on a schedule. That is a genuinely useful list, and it does not include the heater.

They are also the one smart home device with a genuine safety rule attached, and that rule collides directly with the seasonal use most buyers have in mind.

- Took the load rating and platform support from TP-Link's own published specification, and the safety rule and fire figures from the CPSC's winter guidance, quoting its instruction in full because the wording is unambiguous and worth reproducing exactly.

Two things decide it. Matter certification, so it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings rather than locking you to one app. And a stated load rating — 15A / 1800W at 120V is the normal US figure, and a plug that does not print one is telling you something.
