Matter, Thread and Zigbee Are Not Three Competing Standards
They sit at different levels. Matter is the language, Thread is one of the roads it travels on, and Zigbee is a different road entirely.

These three are not competing with each other, and picking between them is not the decision you are being asked to make. They operate at different levels: Matter is what devices say, Thread is one of the networks they can say it over, and Zigbee is an older, separate stack that does both jobs at once.
The practical consequence is the one that catches people out. A device can be Matter-certified and still not work when you get it home, because Matter tells you what language it speaks and says nothing about whether you own the equipment to carry it.
Matter is the language
The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes Matter as building “upon Internet Protocol (IP)” to “enable communication across smart home devices, mobile app, and cloud services”, and defining “a specific set of IP-based networking technologies for device certification.”
Read that last clause carefully, because it is the whole thing. Matter does not replace your network. It selects from existing networks and standardises what travels across them. The Alliance’s own consumer framing is that Matter is “the seal of approval” — a certification that a device will talk in a way other certified devices understand.
Thread is one of the roads
Thread is a low-power mesh network. The Thread Group calls it an IPv6-based protocol that “extends the internet into low power end devices” and provides “device-to-device and device-to-cloud connections.”
That IPv6 detail is the reason Thread and Matter fit together so neatly: Matter needs IP, and Thread gives IP to a battery-powered sensor that could never run Wi-Fi.
But Thread devices cannot reach your home network on their own. Something has to join the Thread mesh to your ordinary network, and that something is a border router — a role played by various smart speakers, hubs and displays rather than a product most people buy deliberately.
This is where the disappointment comes from. You buy a Matter-over-Thread sensor, you own no border router, and nothing works. The box was not lying. You are missing the road, not the language.
Zigbee is a different road, and its own language
Zigbee predates both and does the whole job itself. The Alliance calls it “the only complete IoT solution — from mesh network to the universal language that allows smart objects to work together”, running on “2.4 GHz and Sub-GHz frequency band connections.”
That phrase — network and language — is exactly what makes it a different kind of thing from the other two. Zigbee is not IP-based, which is why Zigbee devices have always needed their own hub translating for them, and why that hub was usually sold by the same brand as the devices.
The one table worth keeping

A device is commonly described as “Matter over Thread” or “Matter over Wi-Fi”. Both are Matter. Only one of them needs a border router, and that is the difference that decides whether your purchase works this evening.
What to actually do
- Before buying anything Matter-branded, find out whether it is Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread. The box often says. If it says Thread, you need a border router.
- Check whether you already have one. Many recent smart speakers and displays act as Thread border routers. If you own one, Thread devices are a good buy; if not, budget for one or choose Wi-Fi versions.
- If your existing kit is Zigbee, it is not obsolete and it does not become Matter. It keeps working through its hub. Some hubs bridge Zigbee devices into Matter, which is a feature of the hub, not of the devices.
- Ignore “supports Matter” as a compatibility promise. It means the device will be understood once it is reachable. Being reachable is the other half, and it is the half nobody puts on the front of the box.
