The 2025 Xbox Allys Split on Chip; Only the X20 Gets OLED
The $599.99 Xbox Ally runs a four-core Z2 A with 16GB; the $999.99 Xbox Ally X and $1,299.99 X20 an eight-core Z2 Extreme with 24GB.

Five handhelds carry the ROG Ally name, and Asus’s own pages split the current pair on the chip: the $599.99 ROG Xbox Ally (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) has a four-core AMD Ryzen Z2 A with 16GB of memory, while the $999.99 Xbox Ally X (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) has an eight-core Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with 24GB. The $1,299.99 Xbox Ally X20 keeps the Xbox Ally X’s chip, memory, storage and 80Wh battery and changes the screen, to a 7.4-inch OLED. The two older models, the 2023 ROG Ally and the 2024 ROG Ally X, run AMD’s earlier Z1 chips.
The figures here are from Asus’s US product and spec pages, its press room and Xbox Wire, read on 11 October 2026. We have not used any of these machines, and this page does not rank them.
The five, model by model
| Model | Processor | Memory | Storage | Screen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally (2023), RC71L | Ryzen Z1 Extreme (8 cores) or Ryzen Z1 (6 cores) | 16GB | 512GB | 7in IPS-level, 1920 × 1080, 120Hz |
| ROG Ally X (2024), RC72LA | Ryzen Z1 Extreme (8 cores) | 24GB | 1TB or 2TB | 7in IPS-level, 1920 × 1080, 120Hz |

| Model | Battery | Weight | Software | US price | Asus US page, 11 Oct |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ally (2023) | 40Wh | 608g | Windows 11 Home | $699 (Z1 Extreme), $599 (Z1) at launch | No store price shown |
| Ally X (2024) | 80Wh | 678g | Windows 11 Home | Launch price not published | $799.99, “Notify me” |
| Xbox Ally (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) | 60Wh | 670g | Windows 11 Home, starts in the Xbox full screen experience | $599.99 at launch | $599.99, “Buy now” |
| Xbox Ally X (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) | 80Wh | 715g | Windows 11 Home, starts in the Xbox full screen experience | $999.99 at launch | $999.99, “Buy now” |
| Xbox Ally X20 | 80Wh | 756g | Windows 11 Home | $1,299 in Asus’s announcement | $1,299.99, “Notify me” |
“IPS-level” is Asus’s term for the LCD panels. The 2025 launch prices are Xbox Wire’s; the original Ally’s are from Asus’s May 2023 announcement, which put the Z1 model “later this year”. Asus’s US store itself returned a server error when we read it, so the last column is the price box on Asus’s product pages, not a checkout.
The names, decoded
“Xbox” marks the 2025 models and later. Asus’s Xbox Ally page says it powers on “directly into the Xbox full screen experience”, and Xbox Wire describes the same start-up for the Xbox Ally X. The X20’s page lists an Xbox button that opens the Game Bar but does not mention the full screen experience.
“X” marks the bigger configuration: 24GB, at least 1TB and an 80Wh battery, on both the 2024 Ally X and the 2025 Xbox Ally X.
“X20” marks the 20th anniversary of Asus’s Republic of Gamers brand, which Asus says the edition was made for. Its chassis is translucent black with gold internals.
The pair that gets confused is the two X models. The 2024 ROG Ally X and the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X share 24GB, an 80Wh battery and the 7-inch screen, but not the chip: Z1 Extreme in the first, Z2 Extreme in the second. Their model numbers, RC72LA and RC73XA, tell them apart on a listing.
What separates them: the chip first
Within the 2025 pair the gap is wide on paper. Asus lists the Z2 A with 4 cores, 8 threads, up to 3.8GHz and 6MB of cache; the Z2 Extreme with 8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.0GHz, 24MB of cache, and an NPU rated up to 50 TOPS. Memory goes from 16GB to 24GB, storage from 512GB to 1TB, the battery from 60Wh to 80Wh. The Xbox Ally has two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports; the Xbox Ally X swaps one for a USB4 port Asus lists as Thunderbolt 4 compliant. The screen is the same 7-inch, 120Hz panel on both.
Asus’s pages do not say how the graphics compare. For the Z1 chips they give compute units and teraflops: 12 and up to 8.6 for the Z1 Extreme, 4 and up to 2.8 for the Z1. For both Z2 chips they say only “AMD Radeon Graphics”. So the spec sheets tell you which chip has more cores, not how much faster a game runs. Outlet reviews of the ROG Xbox Ally X, and why one outlet’s single score for both 2025 models is kept out of our average, are on our handheld shortlist.
The X20: an Xbox Ally X with a different screen
The X20 lists the same Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB and 80Wh battery as the Xbox Ally X. The headline change is the display: a 7.4-inch OLED, still 1920 × 1080 and 120Hz, rated 600 nits in SDR and 1,400 in HDR, with Dolby Vision support, against the Xbox Ally X’s 500-nit IPS-level panel. Asus also lists TMR joysticks, impulse triggers, a microSD Express card reader in place of UHS-II, DisplayPort 2.1 on the USB4 port in place of 1.4, a 68W adapter in place of 65W, and an “improved cooling solution”. It weighs 756g, 41g more.
Asus gives no figure for what the cooling change does, so the spec sheet cannot tell you whether the X20 runs games faster than the Xbox Ally X. The price can be read: $1,299.99 on Asus’s US site against the $999.99 the Xbox Ally X launched at, and a $2,499 bundle with AR glasses and cases. We set that $300 against other successors in when a newer model is not the better buy. Asus says the X20 reaches shelves on 15 October.
Battery: from 40Wh to 80Wh
The original Ally has 40Wh. Asus’s 2024 announcement calls the Ally X’s 80Wh “double the capacity of the previous model”, and the Xbox Ally X and X20 keep 80Wh; the Xbox Ally has 60Wh. Asus lists capacity, not hours, on all five spec pages. A bigger battery does not translate into proportionally longer play in demanding games — why handheld battery life is always short works through the Ally X’s 80Wh against its power envelope.
Who each suits, on the spec sheet
- Xbox Ally, $599.99: the lowest price and the lightest 2025 model, at 670g, for half the cores, two-thirds the memory and half the storage of the Xbox Ally X.
- Xbox Ally X, $999.99: the Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB and USB4 on the 7-inch LCD.
- Xbox Ally X20, $1,299.99: the same internals as the Xbox Ally X with an OLED HDR screen, for $300 more and 41g heavier.
- Ally X (2024) and Ally (2023): the Z1 generation. Asus’s pages showed the 2024 model at $799.99 with “Notify me” and no store price for the 2023 model. If you meet either elsewhere, the model number and the table above tell you which chip, memory and battery you are getting.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between the ROG Xbox Ally and the Xbox Ally X?
The chip and what comes with it. Asus lists a four-core Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB, 512GB and a 60Wh battery in the $599.99 Xbox Ally, and an eight-core Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB and 80Wh in the $999.99 Xbox Ally X, which also adds a USB4 port. Both have the same 7-inch, 1080p, 120Hz screen.
Is the ROG Ally X the same as the ROG Xbox Ally X?
No. The 2024 ROG Ally X (RC72LA) has AMD’s Z1 Extreme chip; the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) has the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. Both list 24GB, an 80Wh battery and a 7-inch 120Hz screen. The Xbox model weighs 715g against 678g and starts in the Xbox full screen experience.
What is the difference between the Xbox Ally X and the X20?
Mainly the screen. Asus lists the same Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB and 80Wh battery in both. The X20 has a 7.4-inch OLED rated 1,400 nits in HDR, against a 7-inch IPS-level panel, plus TMR joysticks, a microSD Express reader and what Asus calls improved cooling. It weighs 756g and costs $1,299.99, $300 more.
When does the ROG Xbox Ally X20 come out, and how much is it?
Asus says it goes on shelves on 15 October 2026. Its announcement gives $1,299 standalone and $2,499 for a bundle with ROG XREAL AR glasses, a dbrand case and a Pelican case; Asus’s US site listed the standalone at $1,299.99 on 11 October.
Which ROG Ally has the biggest battery?
Three tie at 80Wh on Asus’s spec pages: the 2024 Ally X, the Xbox Ally X and the X20. The Xbox Ally has 60Wh and the original 2023 Ally 40Wh. Asus lists capacity, not hours, for all five.
Can you still buy the original ROG Ally from Asus?
Asus’s US pages for the 2023 ROG Ally showed no store price on 11 October 2026, while the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X pages showed prices with a Buy now button. The 2024 Ally X page listed $799.99 with a Notify me button.
How we researched this
No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.
- What this cannot tell you
- Asus’s own US store, eshop.asus.com, returned a server error (503) in two browsers on 11 October, so store prices are the ones Asus’s product and spec pages display, not a checkout. A “Notify me” button may mean out of stock or not yet shipping; Asus does not say which. We found no Asus page giving the 2024 Ally X’s launch price, so its cell shows today’s listed price only. Asus’s pages differ on the Ally X’s memory type: the spec page says “12GB*2 LPDDR5”, the June 2024 release “LPDDR5X-7500”; the table gives the size both agree on. Nothing here measures performance, and we have not used any of these machines.
How we chose this, and what we did
- Why this subject
- “rog ally”, “rog ally x” and “asus rog ally gaming handheld” were top gaming queries in four weekly Google Trends pulls (ops/trends/2026-10-04-digest.md), and the ROG Xbox Ally X20 reaches shelves on 15 October. Five handhelds now carry the Ally name, two of them called “Ally X”. Our handheld shortlist averages review scores for one of them; no page on this site set the five side by side.
- How we looked at it
- Read through a browser on 11 October 2026: the US tech-spec pages on rog.asus.com for the ROG Ally (2023), ROG Ally X (2024), ROG Xbox Ally (2025), ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) and ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026), and the US product pages for the Xbox Ally, Ally X (2024) and X20, taking each page’s “ASUS Store Price” box and its button (“Buy now” or “Notify me”); Asus Pressroom releases of 11 May 2023 (ROG Ally), 2 June 2024 (ROG Ally X) and 25 August 2026 (X20 pre-orders), and Asus US News for the X20; and Xbox Wire’s pre-order post of 25 September 2025 for the 2025 models’ US prices and launch date. Two absence claims have controls. Asus’s pages give no graphics figures for the Z2 chips: the Z1 pages list compute units and teraflops in the same Processor field, and the Z2 pages say only “AMD Radeon Graphics”. The X20 product page does not mention the Xbox full screen experience: we searched its full text for “full screen” (no match), with “Z2 Extreme” as the control phrase (present); the Xbox Ally product page carries the phrase.
