YouTube Premium Lite Keeps Ads on Music and Shorts

At $8.99 a month against $15.99, Lite also leaves out the YouTube Music app and downloads or background play for songs.

What YouTube Premium Lite leaves out: US prices and features from YouTube’s own pages, read 13 October 2026. Premium Lite, $8.99 a month; Premium, $15.99 a month. Ad-free videos: most on Lite, all on Premium. Background play and downloads: most on Lite, all on Premium. YouTube Music Premium: no on Lite, yes on Premium. Jump ahead, queuing and continue watching: no on Lite, yes on Premium. “Most” excludes music content and Shorts; Lite may still show ads in search and browse. Also in the US: Premium Family $26.99, Student $8.99, annual $159.99.

YouTube Premium Lite leaves out music and Shorts: on those, ads may still play, and you cannot download them or play them in the background. It also drops YouTube Music Premium and Premium extras such as Jump ahead and queuing, for $8.99 a month in the US against $15.99 for Premium.

If what you watch is creators, podcasts, gaming and news, Lite covers most of it. YouTube’s own page puts it this way: Lite “is a good fit for you if you mainly watch creator content.”

What each US plan costs

From YouTube’s US Premium page, read 13 October 2026:

Plan Price Who it covers What it includes
Premium Lite $8.99 a month One person Ad-free, downloads and background play on most non-music videos
Premium $15.99 a month, or $159.99 for 12 months One person Everything, including YouTube Music Premium
Premium Family $26.99 a month The manager plus up to 5 household members, 13 or over Full Premium for each
Premium Student $8.99 a month Eligible students, verified every year Full Premium

Lite is $7 a month less than Premium, or $84 over a year paid monthly. The annual Premium plan narrows that: $159.99 against $107.88 for twelve months of Lite, a $52.11 gap. YouTube notes the annual plan “doesn’t automatically renew”.

The US page lists Family, Student and Annual options for Premium and a single monthly price for Lite, with no Lite family, student or annual plan. YouTube’s Two-person plan, sold in ten countries including France, India and Australia, is not offered in the US.

What Lite leaves out

YouTube Help and Google One Help between them list four gaps.

  • Ads on music, Shorts, search and browse. “With Premium Lite, you won’t get ads on videos like gaming, news, and more. Ads, however, may still appear on music content, Shorts, and when you search or browse.”
  • Downloads and background play on music and Shorts. Both work on most videos, but not on Shorts or music content.
  • YouTube Music Premium. Google One Help spells out what that means: “you won’t be able to play songs ad-free, offline, and in the background on the YouTube Music app.”
  • Premium’s extra features. Continue watching, Jump ahead, queuing, and high-quality audio and video are not included. On Premium, YouTube describes high-quality video as “enhanced bitrate 1080p” and high-quality audio as 256kbps on eligible music videos.

“Music content” is wider than music videos

This is the gap most likely to catch a Lite subscriber out. YouTube’s definition covers “official/premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, as well as user generated content that includes content from our music partners”, and gives three examples of the last: covers, dance videos, or a vlog with a popular song in the background.

So a creator’s vlog can fall outside Lite’s benefits because of the track playing under it, and children’s songs are outside them too. YouTube publishes no list of which videos count; it decides per video.

Lite may already come with Google AI Pro

Google One Help says eligible paid Google AI Pro members get the Premium Lite individual plan, in a list of countries that includes the US. If you pay for Google AI Pro, check before buying Lite separately. Three conditions apply, per Google:

  • It is not shared. “Only the plan manager can watch videos without ads”; others in the Google family group still see them.
  • Members in a Google AI Pro trial get it when the trial converts to a paid plan, not before.
  • If you already pay for Premium or Lite on YouTube, the bundled Lite does not switch on, and your existing subscription is not cancelled for you.

Google AI Pro is the step-up phone AI plan in our tally of household subscriptions, so some readers already pay for a Lite plan they have not switched on.

Which to pick

  • You mostly watch creators, podcasts, gaming or news, alone: Lite at $8.99.
  • You listen to music on YouTube or YouTube Music: Premium. Lite keeps ads on music and has no Music Premium.
  • You are an eligible student: Student at $8.99 is full Premium at Lite’s price.
  • Three or more people in one home want it: Family at $26.99 works out to about $4.50 each across six people. Members must live at the family manager’s address, a household rule that Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max relax for a monthly fee.

Lite’s $7 saving is smaller than what Netflix charges to take its ads out, $11 a month, but the logic is the same: you are paying to remove interruptions from what you actually watch, so start from what that is.

Questions people ask

What does YouTube Premium Lite not include?

YouTube Music Premium, ad-free viewing of music content and Shorts, downloads and background play for music and Shorts, and Premium extras such as Jump ahead, queuing, continue watching and high-quality audio and video. Ads may also appear in search and browse.

How much is YouTube Premium Lite in the US?

$8.99 a month on YouTube’s US Premium page, read 13 October 2026, against $15.99 for Premium. That is $7 a month, or $84 a year, less.

Does YouTube Premium Lite have background play?

Yes, for most videos. YouTube says background play and downloads on Lite do not work on Shorts or on music content, which includes official music videos, covers, dance videos and vlogs with a popular song in the background.

Does YouTube Premium Lite include YouTube Music?

No. YouTube says Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium, so songs in the YouTube Music app are not ad-free, offline or in the background. YouTube’s US page shows ad-free YouTube Music as not included in Lite.

Is there a YouTube Premium Lite family plan?

Not on YouTube’s US Premium page, which lists Lite as one monthly individual plan. Premium Family is $26.99 a month for the manager plus up to 5 household members aged 13 or over.

Is YouTube Premium Student cheaper than Premium Lite?

They cost the same in the US: $8.99 a month. Student is full Premium, including YouTube Music Premium, for eligible students, who must verify every year. Lite is the cheaper choice for anyone who does not qualify.

Do I get YouTube Premium Lite with Google AI Pro?

Yes, if you are an eligible paid Google AI Pro member in a listed country, including the US. Google says it is the individual Lite plan, it is not shared with your family group, and members in a trial period do not get it.

How we researched this

No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.

What this cannot tell you
YouTube does not publish a list of which videos count as music content beyond its examples (official music videos, Art Tracks, children's songs, covers, dance videos, vlogs with a popular song), so where a given video falls is YouTube's call, not something a reader can check in advance. We did not test the plans; this page reports what YouTube says each includes. Prices are list prices for new monthly sign-ups and exclude trials; YouTube says benefits and prices can change.
How we chose this, and what we did
Why this subject
Readers searching for YouTube Premium Lite want to know what the cheaper plan drops before they pick it. Our streaming pages cover Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and Hulu but had nothing on YouTube's own ad-free plans.
How we looked at it
Everything is from Google's own pages, read through a browser on 13 October 2026: the US YouTube Premium page (youtube.com/premium, which reported its country as US), including its compare table and expanded FAQ answers; YouTube Help's Premium Lite article; YouTube Help's list of locations for Premium and Premium Lite; the Help articles on family and Two-person plans; and Google One Help's article on Premium Lite with Google AI Pro. The absence of a Lite family, student or annual plan is read from the US Premium page, which lists Family, Student and Annual options for Premium (the control) and a single monthly price for Lite.
