Going by the reviews, the highest-rated gaming laptop is the Razer Blade 16 (2026), at 8.5 out of 10 from three outlets — but all six laptops here land within half a point of each other, so size and budget should decide. On a budget, the MSI Katana 15 HX is the one laptop that Tom’s Hardware, PCMag and Tom’s Guide all pick.

Each average is three published scores converted to ten; the spread is the gap between the highest and lowest of them. Prices are for the configuration named, read on the maker’s US store or at Best Buy. The “best for” column is ours, read off what the reviewers found.
Half a point covers all six
The averages run from 8.0 to 8.5, and no pick’s three scores differ by more than one point. The ranking separates these laptops less than their prices do: the configurations priced in the table run from $2,199.99 to $4,899.99, against half a point between the highest and lowest average.
The Blade 16’s lead rests mostly on one score: Tom’s Guide’s 4.5 out of 5. Tom’s Hardware gave it 4, and PC Gamer 86 out of 100, saying it held back a higher mark because the price went up. The Blade 18 is Tom’s Hardware’s best gaming laptop overall and averages 8.3, the same as the 2026 Zephyrus G14 and the Blade 14.
Same name, different laptop
A model name on a gaming laptop covers several machines. The Katana 15 HX that Tom’s Hardware and PCMag reviewed had an RTX 5050; Tom’s Guide’s had an RTX 5070, a Core i9 and a sharper screen. PCMag and WIRED reviewed the Blade 14 with an RTX 5060, Tom’s Guide with an RTX 5070.
The GPU wattage differs by laptop too. Razer says the Blade 14 sustains up to 100W on its GPU and boosts to 115W with Dynamic Boost; why the same Nvidia GPU runs at different wattages in different laptops explains how to find that figure before you buy. Match the processor, GPU and year to the review you trust.
What the reviewers count against them
- The Katana’s screen. All three reviews mark it down for brightness: “washed out, dim” at Tom’s Hardware, “dim” at PCMag, “not the brightest” at Tom’s Guide.
- Price on the Razers. All three Razer picks draw price complaints from their reviewers, and TechRadar calls the Blade 18’s top configurations ludicrously expensive.
- Battery on the Alienware. Tom’s Hardware calls it middling and Tom’s Guide mediocre.
- Noise. Tom’s Guide says the Blade 16 runs loud and hot, and WIRED lists the Blade 14’s fans as loud. Lenovo, for one, calls fan noise normal when a game pushes the processor above 50%, and what the laptop makers suggest for a loud fan in that case is a quieter power mode.
The Katana’s price
MSI’s US store search returned no Katana 15 HX on 12 October. Best Buy listed the reviewed configuration — Core i7-14650HX, RTX 5050, 16GB, 512GB and a 144Hz Full HD screen — at $1,289.99, but only from a marketplace seller rather than Best Buy itself. Tom’s Hardware’s review, from July 2025, listed “finally, something under $1,000” among its reasons to buy, so check the current price against that before calling it a budget machine.
Close calls left out
The Alienware 16 Area-51 has 2025 scores from Tom’s Hardware (4 out of 5), Tom’s Guide (4.5) and PCMag (4.0), an average of 8.3. Tom’s Guide’s roundup now picks the 2026 model, which we did not score, so neither version is listed here.
The 2025 Zephyrus G14 is still Tom’s Guide’s best gaming laptop overall. Best Buy now sells the 2026 Intel model, so that is the one scored above. For a laptop that is not mainly for games, our general laptop shortlist covers the MacBooks, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the Dell XPS 14.
What to actually do
- Spending under about $1,300: the Katana 15 HX, if a dim screen is acceptable.
- A 16-inch for gaming at a desk: the Alienware 16X Aurora, with three identical scores.
- A laptop you carry daily: the 2026 Zephyrus G14, or the Blade 14 if build quality matters more than GPU power.
- Top performance: the Blade 16 in a thin body, or the Blade 18 for an 18-inch screen.
- Black Friday is 27 November 2026. Check that a sale unit’s processor and GPU match the review before you buy.

How we researched this
No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.
- What this cannot tell you
- bitcritiq has tested none of these laptops. Reviewers tested different configurations under one model name. Katana 15 HX: Tom's Hardware and PCMag reviewed a Core i7-14650HX with an RTX 5050; Tom's Guide a Core i9-14900HX with an RTX 5070 and a QHD screen. Alienware 16X Aurora: PCMag and Tom's Guide reviewed a Core Ultra 7 255HX with an RTX 5060; Tom's Hardware a newer Core Ultra 7 270HX with an RTX 5060 and an OLED screen, and Dell now sells only the newer chips. Razer Blade 14: PCMag and WIRED reviewed the RTX 5060, Tom's Guide the RTX 5070. Zephyrus G14 (2026): all three tested an RTX 5070 Ti. Blade 16 (2026): all three tested an RTX 5090. Blade 18 (2026): Tom's Hardware and TechRadar tested an RTX 5090; we did not confirm GamesRadar's configuration. We did not collect scores for the other picks in the three roundups, including PCMag's Gigabyte Gaming A18, Asus ROG Strix Scar 16, MSI Raider 18 HX AI and Acer Nitro V 16 AI, and Tom's Hardware's Gigabyte Aorus 16X, Acer Predator Triton 14 AI and Asus TUF Gaming A14. How we chose this, and what we did
- Why this subject
- Google Trends to 4 October 2026 lists “gaming laptop” and “best gaming laptop” among the top computing searches, with “best laptop 2026” at Breakout, and Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026. bitcritiq had a general laptop shortlist with no gaming machine on it and an explainer on GPU wattage, but no gaming-laptop shortlist. Candidates came from three current roundups read on 12 October 2026: Tom's Hardware's (updated 5 October), Tom's Guide's (updated 6 October) and PCMag's (dated 25 September). A laptop qualifies when three outlets have published a numeric score for the same model and generation; where a line has a newer generation on sale, the newer one is scored.
- How we looked at it
- Every score was read from the structured data on the review page itself (ratingValue against bestRating) on 12 October 2026, with the page title checked against the model name and year. Scores are converted to ten and averaged to one decimal; the spread is the gap between the highest and lowest converted score. Each pick's strengths and complaints are paraphrased from the reviews' own pros-and-cons lists or verdicts. Prices were read the same day on Razer's and Dell's US stores; ASUS's US store returned a server error, so the Zephyrus G14 price is Best Buy's, for a unit sold by Best Buy; MSI's US store search returned no Katana 15 HX. The GPU wattage for the Blade 14 is from Razer's own product page.
