PS Plus: Essential for Online Play, Premium to Stream

Extra adds a catalog of hundreds of games for $134.99 a year; Premium adds classics and trials at $159.99. Essential is $79.99.

What each PlayStation Plus tier adds, from PlayStation’s US pages read 13 October 2026. Essential: $79.99 a year or $10.99 a month, with online multiplayer and monthly games. Extra: $134.99 a year or $16.99 a month, all of Essential plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium: $159.99 a year or $19.99 a month, all of Extra plus classics, game trials and cloud streaming. Online play is in all three tiers. Upgrading mid-plan costs the price gap for the time left; in Sony’s example, Essential to Premium with 6 months left costs $40.

To play online on a PS5 or PS4, PlayStation Plus Essential is enough: Sony includes online multiplayer in all three tiers, and Essential costs $79.99 a year in the US. Pay for Extra ($134.99) if you want the Game Catalog of hundreds of games, and Premium ($159.99) only if you want cloud streaming, game trials or the Classics Catalog.

What each tier includes

Game Catalog No Yes Yes

Game trials No No Yes

Sony Pictures Catalog No No Yes

Each tier contains everything in the one below it. Sony’s support page also lists PlayStation Direct shipping at no extra cost for all three.

Online multiplayer: Essential covers it

Sony’s wording is that online multiplayer is “included with all PlayStation Plus memberships”. So the step from Essential to Extra or Premium buys a library and streaming, not better online access.

You need a membership for most paid games’ online modes, disc or download. Sony’s FAQ adds that “most free to play games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone do not require a membership”, and its support page says to check PlayStation Store for any game where you are unsure.

How Essential’s yearly price compares with Nintendo’s and Microsoft’s online plans is set out in what each console costs after you buy it.

The Game Catalog: Extra and Premium

Extra’s addition is the Game Catalog, which Sony calls “an on-demand library of hundreds of games”, plus a selection of Ubisoft+ Classics that Sony values at $7.99 a month. Games shown on the PlayStation Plus page on 13 October included Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut.

Two limits apply to every tier’s games:

  • They are yours only while you subscribe. Sony says PlayStation Plus games are yours to keep “for as long as you remain an active member”, and catalog games can leave on dates announced in advance.
  • New PS4 additions have slowed. A footnote on the plan cards says that from January 2026, PS4 games are added to the Game Catalog and Monthly Games only intermittently.

Premium: classics, trials and cloud streaming

Premium costs $25 a year more than Extra on 12-month plans, or $3 more on monthly ones. For that you get the Classics Catalog (“classic games from PlayStation history”), time-limited game trials, the Sony Pictures Catalog of up to 100 films, and cloud streaming.

Cloud streaming is the feature most likely to decide it. Sony states:

Extra has no cloud streaming at all, so a Portal owner who wants to play away from their PS5 needs Premium. If you are still picking the console, which PS5 to buy covers the three models.

Changing tier mid-subscription

Sony’s support guide sets out the rules:

  • Upgrading charges “a pro-rated fee to level up the time remaining until your next payment date”. At your next payment you pay the new tier’s standard price.
  • Sony’s worked example: six months into a 12-month Essential plan, moving to Premium costs ($159.99 − $79.99) ÷ 2 = $40. Sony notes its example prices are illustrative; they match the current US list prices.
  • Stacked time has to be upgraded all at once, so the fee covers every month you have prepaid.
  • Downgrading keeps your current benefits until the change takes effect. The support guide says that happens on your next payment date; the PS Plus FAQ says at the end of your prepaid, stacked period.

You change tier under Settings › Users and Accounts › Account › Payment and Subscriptions › Subscriptions on a PS5, or in Account Management on the web.

What a year costs

The 12-month plans are the cheapest way to pay. Twelve monthly payments come to $131.88 on Essential, $203.88 on Extra and $239.88 on Premium; four 3-month payments come to $111.96, $175.96 and $219.96. Sony shows those savings as 39% off for Essential and 33% for Extra and Premium on its plan cards. Xbox’s plans page shows Game Pass at monthly prices only, and how its four plans split the same features is in the Game Pass tiers explainer.

Which tier for which reader

  • Online play and the monthly games: Essential, $79.99 a year.
  • A large library of PS4 and PS5 games to download: Extra, $134.99.
  • Streaming on a PlayStation Portal, older PlayStation games, or trying games before buying: Premium, $159.99.
  • Free-to-play only: most such games, Sony says, need no membership.

Questions people ask

Which PS Plus tier do I need to play online?

Essential, at $79.99 a year or $10.99 a month. Sony includes online multiplayer in all three tiers, so Extra and Premium add games and streaming, not online access. Most free-to-play games, such as Fortnite and Warzone, need no membership at all.

What is the difference between PS Plus Extra and Premium?

Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, PS5 cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog to everything in Extra. In the US it costs $25 a year more on 12-month plans ($159.99 against $134.99), or $3 a month more.

Can I stream games with PS Plus Extra?

No. Sony lists cloud streaming as not included with Extra. It is a Premium benefit, needs at least 5Mbps up and down, and is not available on child accounts.

How much does it cost to upgrade PS Plus mid-subscription?

The price gap between the two plans, pro-rated for the time left until your next payment. Sony’s example: halfway through a 12-month Essential plan, moving to Premium costs ($159.99 − $79.99) ÷ 2 = $40. Stacked time must all be upgraded at once.

Do I keep PS Plus games if I cancel?

No. Sony says PlayStation Plus games are yours to keep “for as long as you remain an active member”, and some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games leave the service on dates Sony announces in advance.

Is a 12-month PS Plus plan cheaper than paying monthly?

Yes. Twelve monthly payments come to $131.88 on Essential, $203.88 on Extra and $239.88 on Premium, against 12-month prices of $79.99, $134.99 and $159.99. The 3-month plans fall in between.

How we researched this

No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.

What this cannot tell you
We could not read the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog lists themselves, which did not render in our browser, so this page gives no game counts beyond Sony's “hundreds” and does not say which consoles' classics are included. Sony's pages disagree on the speed needed for 1080p streaming (15Mbps on the PS Plus and support pages, 23Mbps recommended on the cloud streaming page) and on when a downgrade takes effect; both versions are given. Prices and catalogs change, and Sony says so on every page. This page does not judge the games in any tier.
How we chose this, and what we did
Why this subject
Our console-cost page gives only PlayStation Plus Essential's price, and our Game Pass explainer answers the same question for Xbox. The reader here wants to know which of Sony's three tiers covers the thing they actually want: online play, a games library, older PlayStation games, or streaming.
How we looked at it
Everything is from Sony's own US pages, read through a browser on 13 October 2026: the PlayStation Plus page (tier cards, 1-, 3- and 12-month prices, footnotes and FAQ, the FAQ read from the page source because its answers are collapsed), the PlayStation Plus support page's benefits table, the support guide to changing a PlayStation Plus subscription, and the PS5 cloud streaming page. The prices shown on the plan cards match the base prices in the page's own store data, so they are list prices, not a sale.
