Ring Won’t Record Without a Plan; eufy and Reolink Will
Eight camera makers’ own pages, read 8 October: what each keeps with no plan, where local storage fits, and the cheapest plan.
If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. It never affects our verdicts or scores — how that works. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Ring and Google Nest cameras keep little or nothing without a subscription; eufy, Reolink, Tapo and Wyze cameras record to storage you own with no plan at all. Ring shows live video and alerts but records nothing until you pay; the newest Nest cameras keep up to 6 hours of event previews. Blink records locally if you add its Sync Module 2 (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) hub and a USB drive, and Arlo does on some models.
The cheapest plan that records video costs between $2.99 and $10 a month across the eight, from each maker’s own page on 8 October 2026.
What each camera keeps with no plan
| Maker | With no plan | Local storage | Cheapest plan (US list) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring | Live view and alerts. No recordings | None for cameras on its plans page | Ring Solo: $4.99/mo or $49.99/yr, one device |
| Google Nest | Live view. Up to 6 hours of event previews on the newest models; 3 hours of video or snapshots on others | None described | Home Premium Standard: $10/mo or $100/yr |
| Arlo | Live view, notifications, two-way audio | On some models | Smart Aware, one camera: $9.99/mo or $95.88/yr |
| Blink | Live view, up to 5 minutes at a time | USB drive in Sync Module 2 (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) | $3.99/mo or $39.99/yr, one device |
| eufy | Recording, playback and alerts | On the camera or a HomeBase | Cloud Backup Basic: $2.99/mo or $29.99/yr per camera |
| Wyze | Live view; cloud events are a thumbnail | microSD card | Cam Plus: $2.99/mo or $29.99/yr, one camera |
| Reolink | Recording to card or FTP server | microSD card | Not settled (see below) |
| Tapo | Live view, motion and person alerts, two-way audio | microSD card, up to 512GB | Tapo Care Cloud: $3.49/mo or $34.99/yr, up to two devices |
This is not a ranking, and we have installed none of them. It is what each maker’s own plan and support pages say.
Ring and Nest: little or nothing without a plan
Ring is the plainest. Its support page says: “Without a subscription, you can view live video and respond to alerts as they happen. Events are only recorded after you subscribe.” Ring’s plans page mentions local video storage once, on a microSD card in its Alarm Pro base station rather than in a camera.
Google gives something, and how much depends on the model. Its help page sets out three groups:
- Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen): up to 6 hours of event video previews, in clips of up to 10 seconds.
- Nest Cam (battery), Nest Cam (wired), Nest Doorbell (battery), Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen): up to 3 hours of event video history.
- Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Outdoor, Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor, Nest Doorbell (wired): 3 hours of photo snapshots, no video.
Live view works on every model with or without a plan, Google says. The same page describes 24/7 video history in detail but says nothing about recording to a card or drive.
Arlo and Blink: it depends on the kit
Arlo says that once the trial ends, a device with no plan keeps live streaming, push notifications and two-way audio, and “Local Storage Recording”, which it notes is “not available for all Arlo devices”. Without a plan you lose video history. Arlo renamed its plans recently: the tiers are now Smart Aware, Smart Secure and Ultra Secure.
Blink records locally through a hub. Its Sync Module 2 takes a USB drive of 1GB to 256GB and the Sync Module XR a microSD card; the Sync Module Core supports neither. Older XT, XT2 and first-generation Indoor cameras cannot use local storage at all. Without a plan, Blink limits live view to 5 minutes.
eufy, Reolink, Tapo and Wyze: local by design
These four say their cameras record with no plan, and the cloud is the add-on.
- eufy says all its security features work “with no monthly fee”, with recordings kept on the camera or on a HomeBase station. It quotes 3 months of on-device storage, and up to a year on its HomeBase S380 with a 16TB drive added.
- Reolink answers its own question, “Does Reolink require cloud subscription for recording?”, with “NO”, offering a microSD card or an FTP server instead.
- Tapo says live view, motion detection, two-way audio and person detection are free on its cameras, and that they take microSD cards up to 512GB.
- Wyze says local storage on a microSD card is “completely free”. Its cloud is different: with no paid plan, a Wyze Cam v4 (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) “will only generate a thumbnail image instead of an Event video.”
We could not settle a Reolink plan price. Its cloud page showed only plans for its 4G cameras and doorbell, at discounted prices, and Reolink’s own blog lists different figures.
What the plan buys you
The strongest reason to pay is the one Reolink states about its own cloud: footage stays available “even if your Reolink camera is stolen or the microSD card is broken”. A card inside a camera goes wherever the camera goes.
Beyond that copy, plans add history length and smarter alerts. Ring and Blink keep cloud video for up to 180 and 60 days; Wyze Cam Plus keeps 14 days and eufy’s Basic plan 30. The top tiers move into professional monitoring and AI search, the ladder our video doorbell costing walks through for Ring and Google.
If you want a camera that also works with Matter, that is a separate question: only SmartThings lists Matter cameras among the four big platforms. And if you are adding up every plan in the house, our household subscriptions tally costs out the doorbell line alongside a console, a VPN and streaming.
What to do
- Decide on the subscription before the camera. With Ring, the plan is the recorder.
- If you will not pay monthly, buy for local storage, and check the exact model: Arlo and Blink depend on it. Our camera shortlist lists the best-reviewed ones, with what each records without a plan.
- Buy the card or drive the camera actually takes. Blink’s Sync Module 2 accepts up to 256GB; Tapo cameras up to 512GB.
- Count cameras before choosing a plan. Ring Solo, Blink’s cheapest plan, Wyze Cam Plus and Arlo’s single-camera tier each cover one device; Tapo’s covers up to two.
Questions people ask
Which security cameras work without a subscription?
eufy, Reolink, Tapo and Wyze all say their cameras record to local storage with no plan. Blink does with a Sync Module 2 and a USB drive, and Arlo on some models. Ring records nothing without a plan, and Google Nest keeps at most a few hours.
Does Ring record without a subscription?
No. Ring says that without a subscription you can view live video and respond to alerts as they happen, and that events are only recorded after you subscribe. Ring Solo, its cheapest plan, is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for one device.
Do Nest cameras record without Google Home Premium?
Briefly. The newest wired Nest Cams and Doorbell keep up to 6 hours of event video previews. Battery models and the 2nd-gen wired Doorbell keep 3 hours of event video. Most older models keep 3 hours of photo snapshots only. Live view works on all of them.
Can Wyze cameras record without Cam Plus?
To a microSD card, yes: Wyze says its cameras have a microSD slot and local storage is free. In the cloud, a Wyze Cam v4 with no paid plan saves a thumbnail image instead of an event video. Cam Plus is $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
Can Blink cameras record without a subscription?
With a Sync Module 2 and a USB drive of 1GB to 256GB, Blink saves clips locally. Sync Module XR uses a microSD card instead; Sync Module Core supports neither. Without a plan, Blink limits live view to 5 minutes.
What do you lose without a camera subscription?
Mostly the cloud copy and the extras. Reolink notes its cloud keeps footage even if the camera is stolen or the card is broken. Plans also add longer history, smarter alerts and AI search, and at the top tiers professional monitoring.
How we researched this
No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.
- What this cannot tell you
- We have not set up any of these cameras, so this reports what each maker states, not what works. What a camera does with no plan varies by model within a brand: Arlo says local recording is “not available for all Arlo devices”, and Google’s free tier differs across three groups of Nest cameras. eufy’s Cloud Backup prices come from a eufy support article about its SmartDrop parcel box, which lists them for eufy cloud backup in general; a Tapo article from June 2026 quotes higher eufy prices, and we could not check the price shown in eufy’s app. Reolink’s cloud page showed only plans for its 4G cameras and doorbell, at discounted prices, and Reolink’s own blog lists different figures, so no Reolink plan price appears here. Tapo’s cheapest plan is labelled both “per device (2 max.)” and “up to 2 devices” on the same page. Prices change; these are 8 October 2026.
How we chose this, and what we did
- Why this subject
- Google Trends to 4 October showed “eufy” rising and “security camera” and “smart home camera” among the top smart home queries. Our existing pages cost out subscriptions for video doorbells only. The camera buyer’s question is a step earlier: which cameras record at all without paying monthly, and what the plan adds.
- How we looked at it
- Every figure is from the maker’s own US plan, store or support page, read through a browser on 8 October 2026: Ring’s plans page and its support article on Ring Protect subscriptions; Google’s store page for Google Home Premium and Google Home Help 9681538; Arlo’s plans page and knowledge-base articles 000062312 and 000063083; Blink’s plans page and its local-storage support article; eufy’s Local Security page and a eufy support article listing Cloud Backup prices; Wyze’s Security Plans page, its microSD page and its Wyze Cam v4 event-recording article; Reolink’s support article on cloud subscriptions and its Reolink Cloud plans page; Tapo’s Tapo Care page and a Tapo article of 12 June 2026. Prices are list prices for the cheapest plan that records video. For Google we recorded what its page says about local storage alongside a feature the same page does describe, 24/7 video history, as a control.
