Going by the reviews, the highest-rated home security camera is the Aqara Camera Hub G350, an indoor camera, at 4.5 out of 5 from TechRadar, Trusted Reviews and MacRumors, an average of 9.0 out of 10. Outdoors the highest is the Arlo Pro 6 at 8.7, and on a budget the $44.98 Wyze Cam v4 at 8.5.

The shortlist, at a glance

Camera Best for Outlet average Spread Records with no plan? US list price
Aqara Camera Hub G350 Indoors, Apple Home 9.0 / 10 0.0 Yes, to microSD $139.99
Arlo Pro 6 Outdoor battery 8.7 / 10 1.0 Only with a $99.99 SmartHub $124.99
Wyze Cam v4 A small budget 8.5 / 10 1.5 Yes, to microSD $44.98
eufy SoloCam S340 Outdoors, no subscription 8.0 / 10 0.0 Yes, local storage $199.99
Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam Ring homes 7.7 / 10 2.0 No $59.99

Each average is three published scores converted to ten; the spread is the gap between the highest and lowest. Prices are list prices for one camera on each maker’s US store, and the no-plan column is from each maker’s own pages, both read on 12 October 2026. The “best for” column is ours, read off what the reviewers found. No three outlets scored all five cameras, so the averages come from different panels.

Indoors: Aqara Camera Hub G350

The G350 has three identical scores and the highest average here. Aqara says it records 24/7 to a microSD card of up to 512GB with no plan, and MacRumors’ verdict is that the most useful features are available without paying.

It is also the pick for Apple Home. It joins as a HomeKit Secure Video camera, which Aqara says needs an iCloud+ plan and an Apple Home hub; our page on what Apple Home needs a hub for covers that requirement. Aqara notes that Apple Home limits its video to 1080p. The G350 also carries a Matter camera certificate, but Apple’s own list of Matter accessories still leaves cameras out, as our look at Matter cameras found, so on an iPhone it works through HomeKit rather than Matter.

Outdoors: Arlo Pro 6, and the plan that comes with it

Trusted Reviews and The Ambient each gave the Pro 6 4.5 out of 5, and both name the same drawback: Arlo’s subscriptions are expensive. Arlo says live streaming and basic alerts work with no plan. Event history starts at $9.99 a month or $95.88 a year for one camera, and recording to local storage needs an Arlo SmartHub, which Arlo lists at $99.99.

Expert Reviews scores it 3, without stating a scale in its structured data, so we report it rather than average it; it calls local storage a costly extra. If the subscription is the deciding question, which security cameras record without a plan sets out what each maker keeps for free.

On a budget: Wyze Cam v4

Tom’s Guide and PCWorld each gave the v4 4.5 out of 5 in 2024, and Tom’s Guide still names it its best-value indoor camera. At $44.98 it is the cheapest pick, records to a microSD card with no plan, and is rated IP65 for outdoor use. Android Police’s 7.5 out of 10 makes the spread 1.5: it counts an outdoor power cable sold separately, no HomeKit, and Wyze’s past security lapses. Cloud event video needs Cam Plus, which Wyze lists at $29.99 a year for one camera.

Outdoors with no subscription: eufy SoloCam S340

PCMag, Trusted Reviews and PCWorld all gave the S340 4 out of 5. It charges from its included solar panel, pans and tilts, and eufy sells it on “Local Storage, No Monthly Fee”. It is the dearest pick at $199.99, the one PCMag calls pricey, and the reviews date from early 2024. Trusted Reviews says its storage cannot be upgraded.

The disagreement: Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam

TechRadar names the Ring Pan-Tilt its best home security camera overall and gave it 4.5 out of 5. Tom’s Guide and PCMag each gave it 3.5. A spread of 2.0 is the widest on this page, and the reviews say why: Tom’s Guide and PCMag mark it down for no subject tracking, a 1080p ceiling, and features behind a subscription.

That subscription is not optional for recording. A Ring camera with no plan shows live video and alerts but saves nothing, and Ring Solo costs $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for one device. Buy it if you already pay for Ring; otherwise the Wyze costs less and records for free. Three years of a Ring plan adds up quickly, as our costing of video doorbell plans shows.

Google’s Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) is Tom’s Guide’s best indoor security camera, and the Nest Cam Indoor has 4 out of 5 from both PCMag and Tom’s Guide. We found no third score: Wired’s 8 out of 10 covers the Indoor and Outdoor 2K together but names the Outdoor in its structured data, and searches of TechRadar, CNET and The Verge turned up news and feature stories but no scored review. Both scored reviews say its best features need a subscription.

The Blink Mini 2K+ has four scores, TechRadar 4.5, PCMag 4, PCWorld 4 and Trusted Reviews 3.5, an average of 8.0. Blink’s own US site links to Amazon rather than listing a price, so we had no maker list price to print, and we do not show Amazon prices.

What to actually do

  • Decide on the subscription first. Ring records nothing without one; the Aqara, Wyze and eufy record to storage you own.
  • Indoors, start with the Aqara G350, especially in an Apple Home with a hub. Drop to the Wyze Cam v4 if $139.99 is too much.
  • Outdoors, choose by plan: the Arlo Pro 6 if you will pay for Arlo Secure, the eufy S340 if you will not.
  • Buy the Ring Pan-Tilt to extend a Ring system, not to start one.

Questions people ask

What is the best home security camera?

Going by published scores, the Aqara Camera Hub G350 indoors: 4.5 out of 5 from TechRadar, Trusted Reviews and MacRumors, an average of 9.0. Outdoors, the Arlo Pro 6 averages 8.7. We have not tested any of them.

What is the best cheap security camera?

The Wyze Cam v4, at $44.98 on Wyze’s US store on 12 October 2026. It averages 8.5 out of 10 from Tom’s Guide, PCWorld and Android Police, and records to a microSD card with no plan.

What is the best outdoor security camera without a subscription?

Of the cameras here, the eufy SoloCam S340: 4 out of 5 from PCMag, Trusted Reviews and PCWorld, solar charged, and sold by eufy on local storage with no monthly fee. It lists at $199.99.

What is the best security camera for Apple Home?

The Aqara Camera Hub G350 has the highest average here and works with HomeKit Secure Video. Aqara says that needs an iCloud+ plan and an Apple Home hub, and that Apple Home limits it to 1080p.

Is the Arlo Pro 6 worth it without a subscription?

Less so. Arlo says live streaming and basic alerts work without a plan, but event history needs Arlo Secure, from $9.99 a month for one camera, and local recording needs a $99.99 SmartHub. Its reviewers praise the camera and name the plan cost as its drawback.

Why is the Google Nest Cam not on this list?

We found two published scores for the Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), 4 out of 5 from PCMag and from Tom’s Guide, and a pick here needs three. Wired’s 8/10 review covers it alongside the Outdoor model, but its structured data names the Outdoor.

How are these security cameras ranked?

By the average of at least three published review scores per camera, each converted to ten and read from the review page itself on 12 October 2026. Every score is linked on the page. We have not tested these cameras and give no score of our own.

How we researched this

No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.

What this cannot tell you
bitcritiq has installed none of these cameras. Averaging other people’s ratings inherits their homes, their Wi-Fi and their view of subscriptions. The outlets differ by camera, because no three outlets scored all five, so the averages are less comparable than on a list where the same reviewers judged everything. Some reviews are old: the Wyze and eufy scores date from 2024. Expert Reviews scores the Arlo Pro 6 at 3 without stating a scale in its structured data, so it is reported but not averaged. Prices move weekly; a list price is a reference point, not what you will pay.
How we chose this, and what we did
Why this subject
Google Trends to 4 October 2026 had “security camera” as a smart-home seed at 15% of its peak, “smart home camera” among the top smart-home queries, and “eufy” rising 50% over four pulls. bitcritiq had explainers on camera subscriptions and Matter cameras but no shortlist. Candidates came from the current roundups at TechRadar (updated 20 August 2026), Tom’s Guide (5 June 2026) and CNET (2 October 2026); PCMag’s roundup address returned a 404. A camera qualifies when at least three named outlets have published a numeric score for that exact model. Four picks appear in those roundups; the eufy SoloCam S340 does not, and is here because CNET’s no-subscription pick, the eufyCam C35, had two scores and the S340 is the eufy outdoor camera we found with three.
How we looked at it
Every score was read from the structured data on the review page itself (ratingValue against bestRating) on 12 October 2026, with the page title checked against the model name. Scores are converted to ten and averaged; the spread is the gap between the highest and lowest converted score. What counts against each pick is taken from the reviews’ own pros-and-cons lists and verdicts. List prices come from each maker’s US store on 12 October 2026, and what works without a plan from the maker’s product, plan or support pages the same day. The absence of a third Nest Cam Indoor score rests on searches of TechRadar, CNET and The Verge; the TechRadar search did return its review of the older Nest Cam (wired), as a control.
