The Return Window Is the Spec Nobody Checks

Update, 19 September 2026. We said Best Buy’s 14-day window applies to “phones and tablets”. Best Buy limits it to activatable devices — “cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots, and cellular wearables” — so a Wi-Fi-only tablet gets the standard 15 days, and Verizon’s activatable devices get 30. Corrected throughout.

A gift bought on Black Friday is 28 days old on Christmas morning, and most return windows are shorter than that. Apple’s shuts on 11 December. Best Buy’s shuts on the 12th, and on the 11th if the gift is a phone or another cellular device.

That is the number the specification sheets leave out, and it is fixed the moment you pay.

Each figure is the retailer’s own published standard policy, read on 5 September 2026. Retailers routinely extend these for the holidays, and none of the three had published a 2026 extension at the time of writing. This page will change when they do.

The membership exception that is not an exception

Best Buy’s paid tiers buy you 60 days, which comfortably covers the sale season. They do not cover phones and other cellular devices, which stay at 14 days for everybody.

That matters because a phone or a cellular tablet is exactly the sort of thing bought in a November sale and given in December, and it is also the category where the recipient is most likely to want a different one. Paying for the membership does not solve the problem for the products where the problem is worst.

What actually goes wrong

The window is not the only thing that voids a return, and the other conditions catch more people.

Condition and packaging. Every policy quoted here asks for original condition with all parts, accessories and packaging. The box is part of the product until the window closes.

Delivery date, not order date. The clock starts when the item arrives, which is later than when you paid, and on a sale week it can be much later. That works in your favour, but only if you know the actual delivery date rather than guessing from the order.

Marketplace and third-party sellers. An item sold through a retailer by somebody else may not run the retailer’s policy. Best Buy excludes Marketplace purchases from its 60-day member window explicitly. Check who the seller of record is before assuming the store’s policy applies.

Opened software, and anything with an account attached. A device signed into an account is a separate problem from returns, and it is covered in our guide to what a video doorbell costs after you buy it for the subscription side of the same trap.

What to actually do

• Put the closing date in a calendar the day the order confirms. It is the single highest-value action on this page and it takes ten seconds. The window runs from delivery, so use the delivery date the retailer gives you.
• Ask for a gift receipt, including online, where it is a checkbox at checkout and cannot be added later.
• Buy the gift you are least sure about from the retailer with the longest window, not the one with the best price. A $20 saving is worth nothing against a $200 device that cannot go back.
• Keep the box until the window shuts. Most failed returns are condition failures rather than late ones, and a box broken down for recycling on Boxing Day turns a returnable item into a non-returnable one.
• Check whether the retailer has announced a holiday extension before you rely on any date here. They usually do, and usually late.
