Refurbished: Read Who Backs the Warranty

Both routes promise twelve months. The difference is who owes you the twelve months. Apple includes its own one-year warranty with every Certified Refurbished product. A marketplace requires its sellers to offer one and says in its own terms that it does not provide it.

That is the whole decision, and it is published on both sites in plain language.

“Refurbished” is not a regulated word

It describes a process, and the process is whatever the seller says it is. That is why the useful question is never whether something is refurbished but what was replaced and who signed for it.

Apple answers both. Its page says refurbished iOS devices come with a new battery and outer shell, that parts are genuine Apple, and that the device arrives in a new box with every accessory. Those are the two components that actually age on a phone, and replacing them is most of the difference between a refurbished device and a used one.

A marketplace warranty answers neither, because it is not a refurbishment standard. It is a defects promise: the terms cover materials and workmanship, and say nothing about the battery you will be living with.

The clause worth reading twice

“This Limited Warranty is not provided by Back Market, but by the Seller.”

That is Back Market’s own wording, and it is fair rather than sneaky — the platform is telling you exactly what it is. But it changes what you are buying. A one-year warranty from a company with retail stores is a different asset from a one-year warranty from a business you have never heard of, and the second one is only as good as that business still trading in month eleven.

There is a genuine consumer protection in the marketplace terms too, and it cuts the other way: a defect appearing inside the period is presumed to have existed at delivery, which puts the burden of proof on the seller rather than on you. That is stronger than most retail warranties.

What to actually do

• Decide who you want to owe you the warranty, then pick the route. That is the only question where the two structures genuinely differ.
• Check what was replaced, not whether it says refurbished. Battery and outer shell are the two that matter on a phone.
• Look up the seller if it is a marketplace, because the seller is the warranty. The platform’s rules are not a substitute for that.
• Buy refurbished earlier in the season than new. Stock is single units rather than a warehouse, so the model you want disappears and does not come back, and the return window runs from delivery either way.
• Do not pay for an extended warranty on top without reading what it adds. A year is already there in both cases.
