Google Nest Devices Get 5 Years of Updates, at Minimum

Google's table gives a minimum date for each Nest speaker, display, camera and thermostat it lists. Most past theirs are still patched.

Nest updates: at least 5 years from US launch. Critical security updates, from Google's table, read 5 October 2026. Nest Audio: minimum 5 October 2025, still patched: yes. Nest Hub (2nd gen): minimum 30 March 2026, still patched: yes. Google Home Speaker: launched 25 June 2026, minimum 25 June 2031. Ended: Nest Learning Thermostat 1st and 2nd gen, Nest Secure, Dropcam. Dates are Google's minimums; most older devices are still marked as patched.

Google promises its Nest and Google Home devices at least five years of automatic security updates, counted from the day each went on sale on the US Google Store, and it prints the minimum date for each one in a table. The Nest Audio passed its date on 5 October 2025 and the Nest Hub (2nd gen) on 30 March 2026; the new Google Home Speaker runs to at least 25 June 2031. The date is a floor, not a switch-off: on 5 October 2026 Google marked every device in its table except the first Chromecast as still getting critical security fixes.

What the date promises

Google’s wording: devices “will receive automatic security updates for at least 5 years from the date we start selling them on the US Google Store.” Those updates “will address critical issues known to Google Nest that are able to be resolved with a remote software update.”

So the promise is about security, and only critical, remotely fixable issues. The page says nothing about new features, including the move from Assistant to Gemini, which Google sets out separately: what changes on Nest speakers, phones and TVs. Buying a device later, second-hand or outside the US does not restart the clock, because the start is the US launch date, the same starting point Google uses for its Pixel phones, which get five or seven years depending on the model.

Past the minimum, still patched

Google’s table marks 28 devices past their five years as still patched, including the original Google Home from 2016.

Every device below carries “Yes” under “Currently receiving critical security updates”. That is 27 of them; the 28th, Nest Secure, is in the ended section further down, because Google’s own help page for it says the updates have stopped.

Google does not say how long it keeps patching past the minimum, so a “Yes” today is a status, not a new promise. Its table lists one “Nest Learning Thermostat” from 2015 with no generation number; the 4th gen has its own row, and the 1st and 2nd gen are covered by the end-of-support page below.

A device that has dropped off the network is a different problem from one Google no longer supports; why smart home devices keep going offline covers the first.

The devices that have already lost support

Device What Google says Since
Chromecast (1st gen) Not receiving critical security updates Minimum ended 31 Jul 2018
Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2nd gen, 2nd gen Europe) Removed from the Nest and Home apps; no software or security updates 25 Oct 2025
Dropcam, Dropcam Pro Cannot connect to the app, stream or record 8 Apr 2024
Nest Secure No cloud connection; no software or security updates Google’s page gives no date

What “ended” means varies. The old Learning Thermostats keep their schedules and can still be set by hand on the unit; Google says they lose remote control, notifications, Home/Away Assist and the Nest Protect emergency shut-off, and that missing updates “may lead to decreased performance”. If you replace one, whether a newer Nest needs a C-wire depends on your heating system. Dropcams stop entirely: no streaming, no recording, and Google says their video history is no longer available.

Other makers’ shutdowns split the same way: Weber’s June Oven kept cooking from its own screen when its app ended.

Google contradicts itself on Nest Secure. Its Nest Secure help page says the system “will no longer receive software or security updates.” Its update table still lists Nest Secure, minimum ended 30 November 2022, as “Yes”. Google’s current list of its connected home devices does not name Nest Secure, though it still names the Nest × Yale Lock and Nest Connect that worked alongside it, so we read the help page as the current position.

How Google compares

For its home devices Google prints a minimum date per device. For TVs, only some platforms publish any update promise at all; which TV makers commit to how many years sets them side by side. The same Google table covers Google’s own streaming boxes, the Google TV Streamer (4K) (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab) to at least 24 September 2029 and both Chromecast with Google TV models, but it has no row for the Google TV sets other makers build.

Questions people ask

How long does Google support Nest devices?

At least five years of automatic security updates, counted from the day Google started selling the device on the US Google Store. Google prints the exact minimum date for each device on its security updates page.

Is my Nest Hub still getting updates?

Yes, by Google’s table on 5 October 2026. The Nest Hub (1st gen) passed its minimum in October 2023, the Nest Hub (2nd gen) in March 2026 and the Nest Hub Max in September 2024, and Google marks all three as still receiving critical security updates.

When does support end for the Nest Thermostat?

Google’s minimum for the Nest Thermostat (2020) was 30 October 2025, and it still marks it as patched. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) runs to at least 20 August 2029. The 1st and 2nd gen Learning Thermostats lost app control and updates on 25 October 2025.

Does Nest Audio still get updates?

Its five-year minimum ended on 5 October 2025, but on 5 October 2026 Google still listed the Nest Audio as receiving critical security updates. Google does not say how long that will continue.

What happens when a Nest device is no longer supported?

It depends on the device. The old Learning Thermostats lost the app but still run schedules on the unit itself. Dropcams cannot stream or record at all, and Nest Secure no longer connects to the internet. All three no longer get security updates.

Do Nest updates include new features?

Google’s promise covers security only: updates for “critical issues” that can be fixed remotely. Its update page says nothing about new features, Assistant or Gemini changes.

How we researched this

No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.

What this cannot tell you
Google's date is a minimum, and Google does not say how long it will keep patching a device past it, so we cannot tell a reader when updates will actually stop. Google's own pages disagree on Nest Secure (see below), and its table lists one Nest Learning Thermostat without a generation number. Dates are Google's US Google Store launch dates; we found no separate table for other countries. We have not tested any device past its date.
How we chose this, and what we did
Why this subject
Owners of Nest speakers, displays, cameras and thermostats keep asking when theirs stops being supported, and Google has already switched off several older lines. Unlike the Pixel, where Google gives a rule and the reader does the arithmetic, Google publishes a dated table for its home devices, so the answer can be looked up rather than worked out.
How we looked at it
The rule, every date and the current status column are from Google's product-documentation page 10231940, read in full on 5 October 2026. The devices that have already lost support come from three Google Home and Nest Help pages: 16233096 (Nest Learning Thermostat 1st and 2nd gen), 10191961 (Nest Secure) and 9257288 (Dropcam). Google's list of connected home devices, Help 9327662, was used to check which devices its privacy commitments still cover. All read through a browser on 5 October 2026.
