Google Assistant Ends on Most Phones, Stays on Nest for Now
Removal from Android began 3 September and takes watches and Android Auto with it. Built-in cars and Nest speakers keep Assistant for now.

Google Assistant is being switched off on most Android phones and tablets: Google began removing it on 3 September 2026, and once it is gone you cannot switch back. Watches, earbuds and Android Auto that pair with the phone lose it at the same time, but Nest speakers and displays, and cars with Google built-in, keep Assistant for now.
Google TV is a third case: on newer sets, adult profiles get Gemini automatically, and everyone else stays on Assistant. Google’s latest dated statement on all of this is a community announcement of 6 August 2026.
Device by device
| Device | Status on 6 October 2026, per Google |
|---|---|
| Android phones and tablets | Assistant removal began 3 September 2026; no switching back once removed |
| Wear OS watches, Gemini-compatible earbuds | Follow the phone: Gemini replaces Assistant |
| Android Auto | Follows the phone: Gemini replaces Assistant |
| Cars with Google built-in | Assistant continues; Gemini rolling out as an upgrade since 30 April 2026 |
| Nest and Google Home speakers and displays | Not affected; Gemini for Home is opt-in early access |
| Google TV | Gemini on Android 14 or later with 2 GB of RAM, adult profiles; Assistant otherwise |
Phones and tablets
Google first said in March 2025 that classic Assistant would leave “most mobile devices” by the end of that year. In December 2025 it pushed the timeline “into 2026”. On 6 August 2026 its community manager set the date: removal starting 3 September, which Google expected could take a few weeks to reach everyone.
After that, Google says, “you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices.” Google’s own pages disagree by a day: the Gemini community announcement, edited 5 August, says “Sept. 4th, 2026”. It also says Google emailed people whose devices are affected.
The open question is phones too weak for Gemini. Google’s March 2025 post promised that on a phone that “doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements to run Gemini, Google Assistant functionality will not change at this time.” Gemini on Android needs 2 GB of RAM and Android 9, and does not run on Android Go. Neither August announcement repeats the exception or names which phones keep Assistant, so the 2025 footnote is the latest word on them.
Two Help pages had not caught up when we read them. The Gemini “Get started” page still gives steps to “Switch to Google Assistant”, and the Android Auto page still says Google “will share more details soon” about the 2026 transition. The August announcement is newer than both.
If you are also weighing what the paid Gemini tiers add, what phone AI costs a year lays out the plans. One paid feature, Call for Me, has Gemini phone businesses for you from a Pixel 11 (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab).
Watches, earbuds and Android Auto
These follow the phone. Google lists “Watches running Wear OS”, “Headphones or earbuds compatible with Gemini” and “Vehicles running Android Auto projected from a user’s mobile device” as losing Assistant when the phone does.
Watches have a gap. Google’s watch pages say Assistant runs on Wear OS 3.0 or later, but Gemini needs Wear OS 4 or later and only works when Gemini is the assistant on the connected phone. Google does not say what a Wear OS 3 watch gets once its phone loses Assistant.
Cars with Google built-in
Cars with Google installed in the dashboard, rather than projected from a phone, are excluded: “Google Assistant will continue to function beyond September 3, 2026.” Gemini started rolling out to them on 30 April 2026 as an opt-in upgrade, “with English in the United States” first, including to existing cars through a software update. Google gives no end date for Assistant in these cars.
Nest speakers and displays
Google says the September changes “do not impact your Google Nest and Google Home smart speakers, displays, or other Google Assistant-enabled speakers and displays.” Google’s October 2025 launch post does say Gemini for Home “will upgrade and replace the Google Assistant” on them. But Google gives no date for Assistant to stop on speakers or displays, and the Gemini for Home Help page still calls it early access, released “to more Google Home users over time”.
The switch is one-way and per home. Once a home moves to Gemini for Home, “it can’t switch back to Google Assistant”, and every compatible device in it changes, including ones added later. The Help page lists 20 countries with early access, among them the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
Google says the full version runs on the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen), Nest Hub Max (affiliate link to Amazon, opens in a new tab), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen) and Home Mini (1st gen). The original Google Home, Home Max, Nest Wifi points and third-party speakers get most features but not Gemini Live. The $99 Google Home Speaker, on sale since 25 June, comes with Gemini for Home.
Smart home control, media, alarms, timers, calendars, lists and general questions are free. Gemini Live needs Google Home Premium, and voice search of camera history needs its Advanced plan, the same tier that lets outside AI agents into a Google Home. How long the hardware itself gets security fixes is a separate question: Google’s minimum update date for each Nest device.
Google TV
Gemini for TV runs only on “Google TV devices with Android 14 or higher and at least 2 GB of RAM”, in 12 countries. There is no on-off switch: an eligible TV in a Google Home gets it automatically for profiles of users 18 and over. Under-18 profiles “continue to get Google Assistant responses”. To go back, Google says, remove the TV from Google Home, and “you get Google Assistant instead.”
Google’s TV page does not say what happens to Assistant on Google TV devices below those requirements, and it sets no end date for Assistant on TVs.
Questions people ask
Is Google Assistant going away?
On most Android phones and tablets, yes: Google began removing it on 3 September 2026, along with watches, earbuds and Android Auto that pair to the phone. Nest speakers and displays, and cars with Google built-in, still run Assistant, and Google has given no end date for them.
When does Google Assistant stop working on my phone?
Google started removing it on 3 September 2026 and said it might take a few weeks to reach everyone. One of its two announcements says 4 September. Once it is gone from your phone, you cannot switch back to Assistant.
Can I switch back from Gemini to Google Assistant?
Not on a phone once Google has removed Assistant from it, and not on a Nest speaker or display once your home has moved to Gemini for Home. On a Google TV, removing the TV from Google Home brings Assistant back, by Google’s TV Help page.
Will Google Assistant stop working on my Nest Hub or Nest Mini?
Not as part of the September change: Google says it does not affect Nest and Google Home speakers or displays. Google does say Gemini for Home will replace Assistant on them, but for now that is an opt-in early access upgrade with no switch-off date.
Does Android Auto still use Google Assistant?
Android Auto uses whatever assistant your phone has, so once your phone loses Assistant, Android Auto runs Gemini. Cars with Google built-in are different: Google says Assistant keeps working in them beyond 3 September 2026.
Is Gemini replacing Google Assistant on Google TV?
On Google TV devices with Android 14 or later and at least 2 GB of RAM, in 12 countries, adult profiles get Gemini for TV automatically once the TV is in Google Home. Under-18 profiles still get Assistant.
Do I have to pay for Gemini on my Nest speaker?
No for the basics. Google’s Help page says smart home control, media, alarms, timers, calendars, lists and general questions are free on Gemini for Home. Gemini Live and camera search need a Google Home Premium subscription.
How we researched this
No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.
- What this cannot tell you
- Google's two announcements disagree on the start date for phones, 3 or 4 September, and neither lists which phones keep Assistant; the latest word on phones too weak for Gemini is a footnote from March 2025. Google does not say what a Wear OS 3 watch, which cannot run Gemini, gets once its phone loses Assistant. It gives no date for ending Assistant on Nest speakers, displays or cars with Google built-in, and no list of countries for the car rollout beyond US English first. Two Help pages still carry pre-September wording (see below). We have not tested any device.
How we chose this, and what we did
- Why this subject
- Google set a date for switching off Assistant on phones in August 2026, and readers keep asking whether that means Assistant is going away everywhere. It does not, and the answer differs for phones, watches, cars, speakers and TVs, with the details spread across a blog post, two community announcements and half a dozen Help Center pages. Our earlier Google Home pieces covered outside AI agents and update dates, not the assistant itself.
- How we looked at it
- Every date and status is from Google, read through a browser on 6 October 2026: the Google Assistant Community announcement by Google's community manager of 6 August 2026; the Gemini Apps Community announcement of 19 December 2025, edited 5 August 2026; The Keyword posts of 14 March 2025 (mobile), 1 October 2025 (Gemini for Home), 24 March 2026 (Google TV), 30 April 2026 (cars with Google built-in) and 17 June 2026 (Google Home Speaker); and the Help Center pages for Gemini for Home (16618650), Gemini for TV (16522213), Gemini on watches (16401122 and 7314149), Android Auto (6348083), Gemini mobile availability (14579026) and getting started with Gemini (14554984). For the absence of an end date on Nest speakers, the control is that the same August announcement addresses Nest speakers and displays by name.
