Free Gemini Moves to Mostly Flash-Lite From 9 October
Choosing Flash takes the $4.99 AI Plus plan, and choosing Pro takes AI Pro. Plus subscribers lose Pro too, on a date Google emails.

Update, 11 October 2026. This page said that from 9 October a free account could use Flash-Lite alone. Google has since revised its notice: free accounts get Auto, which sends most prompts to Flash-Lite and some that need deeper reasoning to Flash or Pro, and they use Flash-Lite alone only if smart model selection is turned off. What free users lose is the choice of model. The headline, table, FAQ and image are corrected; the paid plans are unchanged.
Gemini is still free, but from 9 October 2026 a personal account with no plan no longer picks its model: Google sends most of its prompts to Flash-Lite, and only some to Flash or Pro. Choosing Flash takes Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, and choosing Pro takes Google AI Pro at $19.99, by Google’s own Help page and US pricing.
AI Plus subscribers lose Pro as well, on a date Google says it will email each of them.
Who gets which model, before and after
| Plan, US price a month | Models before | Models after the change | Usage limit | Context window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free, $0 | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | Auto: mostly Flash-Lite, some prompts to Flash or Pro | Standard | 32,000 tokens |
| AI Plus, $4.99 | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash | 2x standard | 128,000 tokens |
| AI Pro, $19.99 | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | 4x standard | 1 million tokens |
| AI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99 | All three, plus Deep Think | All three, plus Deep Think | 5x or 20x AI Pro | 1 million tokens |
The “after” column is Google’s Help article 17004136, which takes effect for free users on 9 October and for AI Plus on the date in Google’s email. The “before” column, the limits and the context windows are from Google’s limits page, 16275805, read on 7 October. Prices are from Google’s US subscriptions page the same day.
What free users keep
The app itself, at $0, with Auto model selection and the standard usage limit. That limit is compute-based: Google counts the complexity of a prompt, the features used and the length of the chat, refreshes it every five hours, and caps it weekly.
Google’s notice is about models. It does not say any feature leaves the free tier, and its US pricing page, read two days before the change, still lists image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live and Canvas for free users. That same page still promised free users “Access to 3.6 Flash” and “Varying access to 3.1 Pro”, so it had not caught up with the Help article. Read its feature list with that in mind. Guided Learning, Google’s study mode, names no plan on its help page either; how it compares with ChatGPT’s and Claude’s study modes sets them side by side.
Each model can also be run at low, medium or high effort. Higher effort gives “more thorough answers” and, Google says, uses more of the limit.
How much the free tier’s 32,000-token window holds, and what happens when a long chat runs past it, is what our explainer on why chatbots forget covers. Google does not say whether that number changes on 9 October.
What Flash-Lite is, by Google’s description
Google’s limits page describes three tiers of model. Flash-Lite is “an efficient workhorse model designed for speed”, aimed at “everyday tasks like summarization and brainstorming”. Flash “balances speed and reasoning to solve a large variety of problems, from simple to complex”. Pro is “our most advanced model”, which Google pitches at maths, coding and longer files.
That is Google’s ranking, not ours; we have not compared the three.
What each paid plan adds
- AI Plus, $4.99 a month: Flash whenever you choose it, twice the free usage limit, a 128,000-token window and 400GB of storage. Not Pro, once Google’s email date arrives.
- AI Pro, $19.99: all three models, four times the free limit, a 1-million-token window and 5TB of storage. This is the cheapest US plan that keeps Gemini Pro after the change.
- AI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99: all three models plus Deep Think, at five or twenty times the AI Pro limit, and storage starting at 20TB.
Some reports said AI Pro also gains Deep Think. Neither Google page we read says so; both name Deep Think for Ultra. The Verge reported the change on 6 October with the same prices and dates as Google’s pages.
Two routes to AI Pro without paying the monthly price come from Google itself. Its release notes of 19 August offer eligible US college students a year of AI Pro at no cost, redeemable until 31 December 2026, after which it renews at the standard price. And the Pixel 11 Pro phones come with six months of AI Pro.
Who the notice covers
Google’s notice applies “when you use a personal account”. Work and school accounts get Gemini through their organisation’s Workspace licence, on a separate Help page with its own limits, and that page did not mention the October change when we read it.
The notice names no country exceptions. It does break out groups when they differ: its section on the previous change, in May, gave users under 18 a separate date. This time it gives one date for everyone without a plan.
Where this leaves the comparison
In September we described Google’s plans as sold on usage limits rather than on capability, because every tier could pick every model. From 9 October that stops being true at the bottom of the ladder: the free tier and AI Plus differ from AI Pro in which models they get, not only how much. OpenAI split its own plans by feature on 29 September, putting its new agent on Pro rather than Plus; what each ChatGPT plan includes sets that out.
Questions people ask
Is Gemini still free?
Yes. A personal Google account with no plan keeps using the Gemini app at $0. From 9 October 2026 Gemini picks the model for free users: most prompts go to Flash-Lite, and some that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro.
What do free Gemini users lose on October 9?
The choice of model. Google’s revised notice puts free accounts on Auto, which sends most prompts to Flash-Lite and some to Flash or Pro; with smart model selection off, every answer comes from Flash-Lite. The notice does not list any feature being removed.
Does Google AI Plus still include Gemini Pro?
Not after the change. Google’s table gives AI Plus Flash-Lite and Flash, with Pro crossed out. Plus subscribers are not on the 9 October date: Google says each will get an email saying when it applies to them.
What is the cheapest way to keep Gemini Pro?
Google AI Pro, at $19.99 a month in the US by Google’s own pricing page. It keeps all three models and four times the free tier’s usage limit. AI Ultra also keeps Pro, from $99.99 a month.
Is Gemini Flash-Lite worse than Flash?
Google positions it lower. Its limits page calls Flash-Lite “an efficient workhorse model designed for speed” for tasks like summarising and brainstorming, and Flash “a more powerful model that balances speed and reasoning”.
Does the Gemini change affect Workspace or school accounts?
Google’s notice is about personal accounts. Work and school accounts get Gemini through their Workspace licence, covered by a separate Help page that, read on 7 October 2026, did not mention the change.
How we researched this
No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.
- What this cannot tell you
- Google's notice says the changes 'start to take effect' on 9 October, which reads as a rollout rather than a switch, and it gives no date for AI Plus. Google's own pricing page and its limits page, both read on 7 October, still show the old access, so for two days Google's pages disagree with each other. Google does not say whether the free tier's usage limit or 32,000-token context window changes with it. Work and school accounts sit under a separate page that does not mention the change; we cannot say whether they will be affected later. Reports that AI Pro gains Deep Think are not on either Google page we read. We have not used any of the plans.
How we chose this, and what we did
- Why this subject
- Google posted a Help Center notice saying model access for Gemini users without a subscription changes on 9 October 2026, and The Verge and Engadget reported it on 6 October. The reader question is short: is Gemini still free, and what goes. Our existing Gemini coverage priced the plans in September, when Google sold them on usage limits and every tier could pick every model, which is the thing this change ends.
- How we looked at it
- Everything about the change is from Google, read through a browser on 7 October 2026: Gemini Apps Help 17004136 ('Changes to Gemini model access and limits'), whose model table is drawn with tick and cross images that we read from the page markup and confirmed on a screenshot; Gemini Apps Help 16275805 ('Gemini Apps limits & upgrades for Google AI subscribers') for the current model table, usage multiples and context windows; Gemini Apps Help 14620100 for work and school accounts; Google's US subscriptions page for prices; and the Gemini release notes. For the absence of any country or Workspace carve-out in the notice, the control is that the same notice does break out a group when one differs: its 'Previous changes' section gives a separate date for users under 18.
