Apple's own lists split iOS 27 into three tiers of iPhone. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus get the update, but not Apple Intelligence.

iOS 27 installs on every iPhone back to the iPhone 11, but that is only the first of three lines Apple draws. Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI need an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16 or later, and changing how Siri sounds needs an iPhone 17 Pro, Air, 18 Pro or Duo. All three lists are on Apple’s own iOS 27 page; two of them are in the footnotes.

The three tiers

Each tier includes everything above it. Where Apple names a phrase such as “iPhone 16 models and later” rather than a model, we have used its phrase.

The phone that gets the update and not the headline

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are on Apple’s iOS 27 list and not on its Apple Intelligence list. From that generation, Apple names only the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. So an iPhone 15 owner who installs iOS 27 gets iOS 27, and does not get Siri AI or the rest of Apple Intelligence.

The same is true of every iPhone 14, 13, 12 and 11 model, and of the iPhone SE. If Siri AI is the reason you want iOS 27, check your model against tier 2 first.

Siri AI has conditions beyond the phone

Even on a tier 2 iPhone, Apple lists three more:

It is a beta. Apple labels Siri AI as beta in iOS 27.
English first. Apple says it is “available in English to start”, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish due in October.
Not in the EU at first. Apple says Siri AI “will not be initially available in the EU” on iPhone.

The server-side features also carry daily usage limits, and Apple says expanded access “will be available for a fee in the future”. We covered what that means in there is no single switch to turn off Apple Intelligence, which also lists every setting if you would rather not use it.

What older iPhones are promised

The oldest supported phones are not left with nothing. Apple’s claim that app launches are “up to 30% faster” comes from its own test on an iPhone 11 Pro Max. It also claims Photos loads new images up to 70% faster, tested on an iPhone 15, and AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster, tested on an iPhone 16 Plus. Those are Apple’s figures on Apple’s test phones, not ours.

Before you install it

If the update seems to drain your battery in the first days, Apple’s own guidance points to work still finishing in the background, which we set out in battery draining after iOS 27. And if you are buying a phone partly for Siri AI, check the exact model: an iPhone 15 Pro qualifies, and an iPhone 15 or 15 Plus does not.

Macs split the same way on macOS 27, with memory as well as the chip deciding the top tier: which Macs get macOS 27, and which get the new Siri voices.

Other Apple features draw their line somewhere else entirely. CarPlay Ultra asks for an iPhone 12 or later on iOS 18.5 or later, which leaves the iPhone 11 family and the iPhone SE (2nd generation) on the iOS 27 list but under the bar — what CarPlay Ultra adds, and which cars have it.

No one at bitcritiq has handled this product. Everything here comes from published sources, listed below.

What this cannot tell you: Apple's lists name models and use phrases like 'iPhone 16 models and later'; where a phone is not named, we have not guessed. Feature availability also depends on language and region, which this cannot settle for any one reader. The speed figures are Apple's own tests on specific phones, and we have not measured iOS 27 on anything.

How we chose this, and what we did

Why this subject: iOS 27 was released on 14 September, and 'will my iPhone get it' is the first question of every release. The update list alone answers it badly this year, because Apple's headline features sit behind two further hardware lines that only appear in the footnotes of the same page. CNET, The Verge and Apple's own newsroom all covered the release; none we read put the three lists together.
How we looked at it: The compatibility list, the Apple Intelligence device list, the device list for customising Siri's voice, and the performance test notes are all from Apple's iOS 27 page at apple.com/os/ios, including its numbered footnotes, which we matched to the features they qualify. The release date is from Apple's newsroom. All read on 16 September 2026.
