What Separates a $400 TV From a $1,200 One

Four specifications decide it, and only one is printed in a form you can compare. The rest are numbers each brand defines itself.

One number on a television is standardised, comparable between brands, and legally required. It is the electricity cost. Almost everything else on the box is a figure the manufacturer invented and defines itself.

That is the difficulty with buying a TV in a sale. The specifications that actually decide the picture are the ones you cannot compare, and the comparable one is not about the picture at all.

The four things that genuinely differ

Panel type. The real division is whether pixels make their own light. LG describes OLED as “self-lighting pixels that turn on and off individually”, giving contrast “without the need for a backlight.” An LCD panel — including every set sold as QLED, which is an LCD with a quantum-dot layer — is lit from behind, so its black is however much light leaks through a closed shutter. This is the single largest difference in the shop, and it is a category, not a number.

Local dimming zones. For LCD sets, how many independently dimmable regions the backlight has. A few dozen zones means haloing around bright objects; several hundred means much less. Manufacturers frequently do not publish the count, and a set that omits it is usually not proud of it.

Peak brightness in nits. What makes HDR look like HDR rather than a slightly contrastier picture. Also frequently unpublished, and when published, often measured on a small window rather than the full screen.

Native panel refresh rate. 60Hz or 120Hz. This one has a right answer and it is knowable — but it is deliberately obscured, which is the next section.

The numbers that are not numbers

Motion rate, clear motion, and their cousins. A figure like “Motion Rate 240” is not a refresh rate. It is a composite the manufacturer assembles from panel rate, image processing and backlight behaviour, and each brand defines its own. A 60Hz panel can and does carry a motion-rate number in the hundreds.

Find the words native refresh rate in the specification sheet. If the sheet gives you a motion number and never a native one, assume 60Hz.

Contrast ratio. “Dynamic” contrast figures are unbounded and meaningless across brands. Ignore them entirely.

HDR support. Nearly every set claims it. Supporting the format and having the brightness to render it are different things, and only the second costs money to build.

Why the same TV has a different model number at every store

This is the part that makes price comparison hard by design, and it is not an accident.

Large retailers commission their own model variants. The panel may be identical to the one reviewed everywhere, with a different stand, a different port count, a changed local-dimming implementation — and a model number that exists nowhere else. So the review you read does not describe the box in front of you, and the price cannot be checked against another shop.

If a model number appears in exactly one retailer’s catalogue and returns nothing on the manufacturer’s own site, treat every review you have read as being about a different television.

The one label that is regulated

Which brings us back to the beginning, and to the only genuinely comparable figure.

The FTC requires televisions to carry an EnergyGuide label — it appears on their published list of products that must have one. Its purpose is exactly what a shopper wants and rarely gets: the label “lets you know how much energy an appliance uses and see how it compares to the energy use of similar appliances.”

Two honest caveats, both the FTC’s own. The cost shown is “only an estimate, based on typical use and a national average price for energy”, and your bill “will depend on how you use the appliance and your local energy price.”

So do not read it as a bill. Read it as the only spec on the set that two manufacturers had to calculate the same way — which also makes it a rough proxy for backlight technology and panel efficiency, quietly, without either brand’s marketing department involved.

This is a US requirement. Elsewhere the equivalent labelling differs, and the rest of this article still applies.

What to actually do in a sale

  • Decide OLED or LCD before you look at prices. It is the only choice here that money cannot un-make, and it narrows the field to something you can actually compare.
  • Find the native refresh rate. If the spec sheet will not say it plainly, that is the answer.
  • Check the model number on the manufacturer’s own site. If it is not there, you are looking at a retailer-exclusive variant and the reviews do not apply to it.
  • Read the EnergyGuide. It is the one number nobody optimised for marketing, and on a set you will run for six years the difference is real.
  • Check what it cost last month. The percentage on the label is measured against list price, and list is not what the set sold for in October — US electronics discounts reached 30.9% off list last season on that basis. A price-tracking site gives you the real baseline in seconds.

US-specific in one respect: the EnergyGuide label is a Federal Trade Commission requirement and does not exist in that form elsewhere. Panel technology and model-numbering behaviour are the same everywhere.

TVs take the deepest discounts of any electronics category in the US holiday season, which makes them the category where a shopper is most likely to be pushed into a decision quickly. The specifications that decide picture quality are largely unstandardised, and the one number that is standardised is the one nobody reads.
How we looked at it
Took the labelling requirement and its caveats from the FTC's own consumer guidance, and the panel description from LG's own OLED explainer. Where a figure has no standard behind it — motion rate, contrast ratio, and most brightness claims — this says so rather than repeating a number it cannot check.
